I have extra empathy for the Seattle Seahawks who travel cross country to enter extreme enemy territory in hopes of getting their first win of the season.

Both teams have something to prove having both lost their opening game of the season by a combined score of 68-24. Unfortunately for the Seahawks, the Steelers have a ton more to prove on offense and defense in order to reenter the conversation as Super Bowl contenders.

Seattle looked good at times in their season opener against San Francisco but looked dreadful at others. The team generated just 31 yards of offense in the first half before rallying to finish with an unflattering 219. The Hawks drew within two points but fell apart on Special Teams where they allowed two return touchdowns by Ted Ginn Jr.

About the only consistently good aspect of the Hawks debut was the defense which was under constant siege but held up surprisingly well.

Tavaris Jackson did little to silence his critics last week passing for 197 yards and Marshawn Lynch was unable to display the elusiveness necessary for a lead back. Seattle could be without Sidney Rice and Robert Gallery once again this week which furthers the ugliness of what could be Sunday. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

The Steelers got beat last week – rarely in the last few years has it happened two weeks in a row. Ben Roethlisberger was off, Rashard Mendenhall was off and the vaunted run defense that allowed 62.8 yards allowed per game last year was shredded for 170 rushing yards – 385 yards total.

I will give the Steelers a total team mulligan!

Betting Outlook: The Steelers still, despite laying an egg last week, are an elite team. Seattle will be bombarded by a top notch offense and will be attacked by a defense that was made to look foolish one week ago.

With the offense looking to shake off a seven turnover game and with the defense looking to rebound after giving up 385 yards of offense and 35 points in Week 1, the Hawks are going to have to come up with a herculean type effort to even keep this game close.

I can’t see it happening.

NFL Betting Trends:

SEA are 2-12 ATS in their last 14 games on grass.
Over is 15-5-1 in SEA last 21 games overall.
Over is 36-15 in SEA last 51 games on grass.
PIT are 3-8-1 ATS in their last 12 games in Week 2.
Over is 55-27-3 in PIT last 85 home games.

The Hawks are 16-37-1 against the spread in their last 54 road games – nuff said. The 14 ½ points don’t scare me!

Pick: Pittsburgh Steelers -14 ½
