NFC supremacy is on the line on Sunday when the 6-2 New York Giants head west to take on the 7-1 San Francisco 49ers. Both teams have been pleasant surprises this season and both need to keep winning in order to stabilize their place at the top of their respective divisions.

The New York Giants keep getting it done despite injuries on both sides of the ball. With Ahmad Bradshaw and Hakeem Nicks out of the lineup, the G-Men were able to notch an impressive 24-20 win over the New England Patriots last week. Now comes a huge test – a matchup against the most balanced team in the NFC.

New York’s offense has transformed from a running team to a passing squad this season. Eli Manning has been superb and has managed to limit the mistakes that have plagued him throughout his career. The Giants own the league’s 6th ranked passing offense, generating 282 yards per game through the air. Manning is 4th in the NFL with 2377 yards already this season with 15 touchdowns and only six interceptions. Hakeem Nicks should be back from injury this weekend to bolster an impressive pass catching group that includes Marion Manningham, Victor Cruz and an emerging Tight End, Jake Ballard.

The Giants running game has been disappointing this season – 29th ranked and gaining an average of just 88.75 yards per game. Ahmad Bradshaw will likely return to action after a one game absence and is a terrific compliment to the finally healthy Brandon Jacobs.

New York’s defense has also been banged up all season but finally resembles a unit that has terrorized the leagues for the better part of a decade. The Giants are 17th against the pass and 25th against the run. But the return of Osi Umenyiora and Justin Tuck has given the Giants a stout line again.

The San Francisco 49ers have been playing lights out all season long both offensively and defensively. Like the Giants, the biggest difference to the offense has been their ability to limit mistakes – Alex Smith has just 10 touchdowns this season but has thrown a league low two, count ‘em two interceptions all season long. San Francisco won’t beat you with their passing game. They are 30th in the NFL with an average of only 173.50 yards per game. Where they are dangerous is in the running game where they rank 6th and gain an average of 137.63 yards per game. Frank Gore is banged up at the moment but he has been on some sort of tear! Gore is fifth in the NFL with 782 yards rushing this season and he has gone over 125 yards with a score in four of his last five games.

Defense has been the calling card of San Francisco so far this season. They are the best rushing defense in the NFL and they give up a league low 14.75 points per game. The 49ers have been vulnerable versus the pass this season – 22nd ranked and giving up 255.13 yards per game.

Betting Prediction: The New York Giants are 6-1 SU in their last seven games and are 4-1 SU in their last five on the road. The Giants are an impressive 30-13 ATS in their last 43 games on the road and are 14-6 ATS in their last 20 as road underdog. Against the 49ers New York is 3-6 SU in their last nine and 4-0-1 ATS in their last five. In San Francisco, the Giants are 1-4 SU in their last five games. The San Francisco 49ers are 8-0-1 ATS in their last nine games and are 5-0-1 ATS in their last six at home. The 49ers are 6-0-1 ATS in their last seven games against the NFC but are 2-4 ATS in their last six at home versus the Giants.

The Giants played almost the perfect road game last week and should be able to duplicate their effort this week. Last week they got it done without two key cogs on offense and with the return of Bradshaw and Nicks; this team is a whole lot better. Look for Eli Manning and company to exploit the only weakness of the 49ers this week – the passing defense. The 49ers have been impressive but it is time for the much anticipated letdown! In a close game, take the road team to provide a minor upset!

Pick: New York Giants +3
