Without a doubt, the best matchup of the weekend takes place in Foxborough when the Indianapolis Colts come to town to face the New England Patriots. Despite being in different divisions, this will be the eighth game in eight years between the two sides, each game being as intriguing as they come.

The Indianapolis Colts have looked more like a MASH unit than a football team at times this season. Injuries on both sides of the ball have forced backups into action but those backups have done their jobs and have the Colts looking like Championship contenders yet again.

Peyton Manning is once again a front runner for MVP – ho hum! He and the Colts have the third highest scoring offense (26.67 points per game) despite a 27th ranked running game. Passing has been their game. Manning has thrown for 2663 yards this season with 16 touchdowns and just four interceptions. These numbers include two games in which Manning uncharacteristically failed to throw a touchdown in a game.

Dallas Clark, Anthony Gonzalez and Austin Collie have been out of action due to injury but Manning has been able to rely on his usual Stud Reggie Wayne and two new toys, Jacob Tamme and Pierre Garcon. The Colts passing game is a handful no matter who is catching the ball.

The Indianapolis defense has been without Bob Sanders nearly the whole season – surprise!! And the D has missed other starters along the way. Indianapolis still owns the 11th best scoring defense (20.56 points per game), the 10th ranked passing defense (211 yards per game) but has struggled to stop the run…again!

The New England Patriots have won six of their last seven games including a beat down of the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 10. Do they miss Randy Moss – nah! OK, maybe a bit. Tom Brady is still Tom Brady and with the sudden emergence of a running game, the Patriots look like a far more complete team than advertized.

New England has the 14th ranked passing game and the 17th ranked running game in the league but they score the most points in the NFL (28.67 per game). Tom Brady has passed for 2176 yards this season with 17 touchdowns and just 4 interceptions.

New England’s defense is still young but it appears to be maturing before our very eyes. They currently rank 30th versus the pass (277.78 yards per game) and 19th against the run (113 yards per game). They are giving up a rather unflattering 23.78 points per game, good for 25th in the NFL.

Betting Prediction:

Indianapolis is 4-1 SU in their last five games and is 13-5 SU in their last 18 on the road. However, the Colts are just 2-4 ATS in their last six games on the road. Against New England, Indianapolis is 5-1 SU in their last six games but is 6-15-2 ATS in the last 23, 7-15 SU in their last 23 overall and 2-9 SU in New England.

New England is 6-1 SU in their last seven games overall, 4-1-1 ATS in their last six and 13-1 SU in their last 14 games at home. Against the Colts, the Patriots are 2-4 ATS in their last six games and 10-4-1 ATS in their last 15 but are just 1-5 SU in their last six.

The history between these teams suggests that this will be a close game – Bill Belichek is 8-6 SU in the last 14 games against Indy as Patriots coach. With an emerging running game and with the presence of Tom Brady on home soil, it is hard to bet against the Patriots. It is nearly unfathomable that the Colts lose four games in one season but the unfathomable is likely to happen. Patriots win in a close game!

Betting Pick: New England Patriots -3
