Kansas City (9-3)  has suffered a complete melt down since starting the season 9-0, which  has included a defeat to San Diego bookended by two loses to the Denver Broncos.  However, with a win on Sunday against the Washington Redskins, and a loss or tie from Miami or Baltimore, the Chiefs can still  punch their ticket to the postseason.

Unlike earlier in the year, the Chiefs offense has  been unable to keep pace in shootouts,  giving up 76 points in their last two outings.  Last week, the defense allowed Peyton Manning to pass for 403 yards and five touchdowns,  as visiting Denver swept the season series to take control of the AFC West race.

Nevertheless, the Chiefs still only allow an AFC-low 17.8 points per game and boast an NFL-best turnover margin of plus-14. Not good for a Redskins unit that struggling to points on the board.

Washington (3-9) has lost four consecutive games, scoring and average of 16.5 points, but to their defense, those three loses have been by eight points or fewer.

The Redskins have relied on their league’s best ground game, which has been impressive of late, rushing for at least 100 yards in 11 consecutive games. But they have not been able to get the job done defensively, falling  out of playoff contention after squandering a 14-point lead Sunday against the New York Giants.

Once again, quarterback Robert Griffin III turned a solid outing, and possibly one of his best efforts of the season against New York, completing 24-of-32 passes for 207 yards and a touchdown and rushing for a season-high 88 yards on 12 carries.

Griffin will have the advantage on Sunday as the injury bug has hit the Chiefs at a bad time with linebacker Justin Houston (team-high 11 sacks) out with an elbow injury.

Matt’s Free Prediction

The Chiefs have won seven of eight all-time meetings, including a 14-6 victory at Washington in the most recent  battle in 2009.

And while the Chiefs have seemed to hit a low point in their season, I expect them to find that early season mojo in this one.

Chiefs 24, Redskins 17
