For the 49ers, they will be out to prove that they are deserved favorites to go deep into the playoffs again this year and the Cowboys look to just remain relevant in what should be a wide-open NFC East. Both teams have some question marks on defense – Will Tony Romo and Colin Kaepernick dominate the headlines?

Let’s break it down.

49ers

Let’s be honest – the San Francisco 49ers looked awful during the preseason both on defense and on offense. Let’s start with the defense which looks to be in some trouble as we head into Week 1. Chargers QB Philip Rivers and Peyton Manning combined to go 21 of 24 for 187 yards and two touchdowns against San Francisco’s first team defense in the preseason – not good!

Heck, Denver’s backup went 10 of 13 for 105 yards and a TD against the Niners!

On paper San Francisco looks nothing like the defensive juggernaut that dominated the last couple of NFL seasons – outside linebacker Aldon Smith is gone for 11 games after his most recent suspension and inside linebacker NaVarro Bowman is still a couple of months away from return from an ugly injury sustained in last year’s playoffs.

Antoine Bethea who was signed to help out the secondary is dealing with concussions and Donte Whittner and Carlos Rodgers left via free agency in the offseason. Shockingly San Francisco’s defense looks like it is in a bit of trouble as we head into Week 1.

The Niners offense didn’t exactly light the world on fire during the preseason either. Colin Kaepernick was just 12 for 22 in the preseason for 115 yards – zero TDs. His line failed to protect him and the team struggled mightily to get anything going offensively.

Thank goodness for the Dallas Cowboy defense!

Cowboys

Dallas was bad defensively last season (last in almost every statistical category) and they lost some of the best players this past offseason – DeMarcus Ware is in Denver, Jason Hatcher is in Washington and linebacker Sean Lee suffered a season ending knee injury. Adding to the misery Orlando Scandrick will be out the first four games thanks to a PED suspension.

Translation – the Cowboys have a terrible defense and are going to have to score a ton just to be competitive. As always the Cowboys fortunes depend solely on the health of….

Tony Romo returns from back surgery to lead an offense that is absolutely going to have to shine this upcoming season. Romo’s effectiveness out of the gate is a huge question mark.

We know that Dez Bryant, Jason Witten and the Cowboys pass catchers will be busy but we just don’t know how dependable they will be with an aging, banged up QB getting them the ball.

Romo will have the benefit of a healthy running game behind him – healthy for now! When DeMarco Murray is on point out of the backfield, the Cowboys are a different team but too frequently the Boys have either had to play without Murray because of injury of they have forgotten about him altogether.

Simply put, the Cowboys should be able to score a few points on a San Francisco defense that has a few question marks heading into Week 1 but will they be able to score enough?

Week 1 NFL Prediction

The San Francisco 49ers have a major chip on their shoulders after being dismissed by their division rival last year and having been berated in the preseason because of their ineffectiveness. Expect the 49ers to come out firing on all cylinders and score at will on Dallas’s awful defense.

I’m not saying that Dallas won’t score their share of point; just sayin’ that they won’t be able to score the 35 it’s going to take to beat a motivated 49ers squad on Sunday.

Week 1 Final Score Pick

San Francisco 49ers -4 1/2
