In Week 7 of the NFL season we will see a match-up between the New Orleans Saints (2-3) and the Detroit Lions (4-2) at Ford Field. Cappers Picks will provide free NFL picks all season.

A Carolina tie last week has opened the door for the Saints to somehow keep the NFC South race tight, while the Lions are in a close battle with the Packers to stay atop the NFC North.

This was the one game this week that I was hoping to steer clear of with my bets as I’m really torn on both teams right now. I was very high on the Lions early on after they destroyed the Giants, but they’ve been marred with injuries to key players and looked anything but spectacular more often than not thus far.

The Saints were a very popular pick to win the NFC this year, but to this point have failed to impress and sit with a 2-3 record in a fairly weak NFC South.

Lions

It’s getting harder and harder to stay on this Lions bandwagon. I’m not a Lions fan by any means but I had myself believing my own hype generated around the Lions. The defense has been stellar and shut the Vikings down completely last week in a 17-3 victory. The offense however has been very ordinary in the absence of receiver Calvin Johnson.

Since their week one dismantling of the Giants, the Lions have  only scored more than 20 points once (a 24-17 win over the Jets). Johnson is questionable again this week for Detroit and if he doesn’t suit up this one isn’t going to go well for the Lions.

Defense speaks for itself. They’ve been good, and I mean really good. In their last four games this group has only given up 44 points (11 points per game). They’re allowing a league best 270 yards per game and have been a nightmare to run the ball against, allowing just 73 rush yards per game.

Saints

The bye week was exactly what this team needed and I feel that this will be a big jumping off point for the Saints this week. The offense will be without standout Tight End Jimmy Graham, but QB Drew Brees has had two weeks to think on that and I’m sure that him and coach Sean Payton have come up with a scheme to counter Graham’s absence.

Normally this team is easy to bet against on the road, but going into Detroit they will have the comforts of a dome and the playing field is essentially level. The Saints can score points; they did it in a comeback win over the Bucs where they racked up 37 points on over 500 yards of offense. Detroit can stop the run, but don’t count on the Saints even trying to run the ball in this game, they’re going to let Brees air it out all day long and see if the Lions’ secondary can keep up.

Defense for the Saints is a problem. Giving up 31 points to the Bucs (although they won) is disappointing to say the least. New Orleans is a feeble 23rd in the NFL in terms of yards allowed per game at nearly 380. They’re also giving up a pretty abysmal 28 points per game (28th in the NFL).

Week 7 Saints vs. Lions 4* Free Pick

For all of the Saints’ shortcomings on defense, they’ve had a bye week to get things sorted out, while the Lions still seem to be having a hard time figuring out how to put the ball in the end zone with any kind of regularity. I think Brees can overcome the Lions’ staunch D this week and if he puts up 27 points the Lions will be very hard-pressed to reach that number.

Pick the Saints +2
