Teams moving in opposite directions meet at Qualcomm Stadium when the New York Jets, losers of three straight games meet the San Diego Chargers who are riding an impressive three game win streak. For the Chargers, everything seems to be going right on both sides of the ball while the Jets have had a few issues on defense and Geno Smith’s learning curve seems to be going at a snail’s pace.

Jets

The Jets are coming off a 24-17 loss to Detroit – a game that their patented strong defense allowed Mathew Stafford to pass for 293 yards and two TDs – and Calvin Johnson was very limited in the win! Strong defense is the signature of the Jets – without them keeping other teams out of the end zone it is difficult to see New York’s offense winning a lot of games. The Jets still own the fourth best overall defense in the NFL but there were definitely some cracks exposed last week.

Speaking of the offense. They put up 14 points on a good Detroit defense but had their issues running the ball – a troubling sign for a team that needs to run the ball, control the clock and keep opposing offenses off the field. Geno Smith isn’t getting it done – his 75 passer rating is among the worst in the league – he went just 17-for-33 for 209 yards and a TD last week – not good for a QB that is supposed to be turning the corner.

How long can Coach Rex Ryan ignore the fans calls for Mike Vick? I’m not sure!

Chargers

The San Diego Chargers have been one of the most pleasant surprises in the NFL this season. Philip Rivers has been terrific – he went 29-for-39 last week for 377 yards and three TDs. His passer rating has been over 130 the last two weeks – incredible! Rivers’ receiving corp. has been terrific alongside their QB – Eddie Royal has posted consecutive 2 TD games and Keenan Allen still looks like one of the best pass catchers in the game. New York had their issues containing Matt Stafford and the Lions last week – similar things are expected Sunday.

All together San Diego is the fourth best passing team in the NFL – and they have to be! With Ryan Mathews and Danny Woodhead on the shelf, the Chargers have gotten little from their running game – not that they would have a ton of success against New York’s stout run defense anyway!

San Diego’s defense has been very good at times this season. They held the Jags down last week and had their way with Seattle earlier in the season. The Chargers are a formidable defense and should have success limiting the average offense of the Jets.

NFL Week 5 Betting Trends

• Over is 6-2 in NYJ last 8 road games
• NYJ are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games in October.
• NYJ are 4-9-2 ATS in their last 15 games on grass.
• Under is 12-3 in SD last 15 vs. AFC.
• SD are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games in October.
• NYJ are 6-2 ATS in their last 8 meetings.

The Jets are 0-3-1 ATS so far this season while the Chargers are 4-0 ATS – pretty telling. By now it should be apparently obvious who I am going with this week. The Chargers are scorching hot with little reason to think a slowdown is imminent. San Diego will score points this week – I’m not sure Geno Smith and company will do enough to keep this one close.

NFL Week 5 Betting Prediction: 4* Play on San Diego Chargers -6
