2009 Record: 2-14
ATS: 4-10-2

The 2009 season for this hapless, helpless and hopeless NFL franchise was, in a narrow comparative sense, a success. Detroit actually won a game.

Yes, that’s a harsh statement, but in many ways, it’s a reality. After the 2008 season, which delivered an 0-16 record and stamped the in the record books as the first team to bake a bagel in a 16-game season, the men in the “Honolulu Blue and Silver” merely needed to win one game and relieve themselves of the terrible burden.

Thankfully, in the third week against Washington, the Lions were able to do the deed. An ugly but gritty 19-14 win ended a 19-game losing streak and allowed the entire organization to breathe freely again.

Later in the year, the Lions won a crazy game against Cleveland thanks to a pass interference by the Browns on a Hail Mary at the very end of regulation. The penalty enabled Detroit to get one untimed down from the Cleveland 1-yard line, and when quarterback Matthew Stafford hit teammate Brandon Pettigrew with the 1-yard touchdown pass, the Lions (with the point after touchdown making the deed official) stole a 38-37 decision.

They’ll surprise with a key win or two and likely shape the playoff picture for the other three teams in the division, but one thing is for sure: they won’t be a part of the 2011 postseason.

A 2-14 season never felt so good for a team that consistently played hard but was once again woefully outclassed on almost every Sunday.

In 2010, the Lions have begun to build some legitimate pieces now that Matt Millen no longer works as the team’s (inept) general manager. The new Lions’ front office built a lot of depth and quality on the defensive front. First-round draft choice and No. 2 overall pick Ndamukong Suh will instantly make Detroit’s defensive line a lot better.

The additions of Kyle Vanden Bosch and Corey Williams will further beef up the Lions’ defensive muscle in the trenches. On offense, the Lions drafted Cal-Berkeley’s speed merchant Jahvid Best in an attempt to give quarterback Matthew Stafford a legitimate threat at tailback.

It’s clear that Detroit is beginning to stockpile talent that could really pay off in a few years. However, the 2010 forecast is still grim because the Lions have little to no quality in the secondary, the linebacking corps, and along the offensive front. Stafford took a pounding in his rookie campaign last year, and the Georgia product will probably be tenderized a lot more this season.

As for the defense, it’s unfortunate yet undeniable that the NFC North is the last division you want to inhabit if you have a subpar secondary. Jay Cutler (Chicago), Aaron Rodgers (Green Bay), and that Brett Favre guy (Minnesota) can all pitch the pigskin really well. Detroit’s just not in position to stop the opposing offenses in its division.

Lions 2010 Outlook

If Detroit wins five or six games, the 2010 season will be a relative success. A 5-11 mark actually looks likely because the organization is beginning to hit on its draft picks after many years of strikeouts.
