Denver Broncos vs. San Francisco 49ers Preview

In merry old England on Sunday night, well afternoon our time, the San Francisco 49ers (1-6) face the Denver Broncos (2-5). NFL betting lines have San Francisco as a slight 1-point favorite in this game with a total of 42.

After the NFL sent 3 legit teams in the last few years to England in the Giants, Saints, and Patriots they now get 2 teams that are both in the basement of their respective divisions. I don’t know how the English can get excited about seeing a couple of teams that are really struggling and are both, pretty much, long shots to make the playoffs.

After getting their first win of the season a couple weeks back the 49ers fell back to earth last week allowing the Carolina Panthers to get their first win of the season 23-20. Denver has lost 3 straight and in their last game gave up 59 points to Oakland.

The Broncos may be happy to leave the country since they lost their last game 59-14, gave up 24 points in the first quarter, and allowed Oakland to gain 508 yards of offense. It was so bad Denver head coach Josh McDaniels stated after the game, “I apologize to (owner) Pat (Bowlen) and the organization, all the fans and everyone else. It was awful.”

The 49ers will be going with a new QB this week in Troy Smith, who began last week as the clubs 3rd string QB. He has not started a game since 2007 and in the last 2 seasons he has only has attempted 13 passes.

Denver QB Kyle Orton has played well this season leading the Broncos and their 3rd ranked passing offense. However, he is getting no help from the running game with Denver ranking dead last in the league only averaging 68.4 rushing yards per game. Football betting

Both teams are 2-5 ATS this season and neither team has solid betting trends heading into this non-conference game. Want an example? Well, San Francisco has not covered the spread in the last 5 games when they were the favorite and Denver has only covered the spread one time in their last 5 games when they were the underdog.

With Smith getting the start in this game a lot of pressure can be taken off of him if Frank Gore can play well out of the backfield. That is a distinct possibility in this game, as Gore has rushed for 251 yards the last 2 games and he has averaged 95 yards per game in the last 4 games after he only averaged 64.3 in the first 3. Not only that, but the Denver rushing defense ranks 30th in the league and last week gave up 328 rushing yards to the Raiders.

If Denver can stop the run and force Smith to beat them in the air they will be in good shape, as one bright spot for the Broncos this season has been the solid play of their secondary.

Orton had a season low 198 yards last week and he will have to get on track in this game against a San Francisco pass defense that is mediocre ranking 15th in the league. The Broncos’ WR tandem of Brandon Lloyd (35 rec 709 yards 3 TD) and Jabar Gaffney (41 rec 462 yards 1 TD) will be tough to cover and if the 49ers can shut them down Denver may be in for a long game, especially if their running game continues to struggle.

The weather looks to be on the side of the 49ers, as there is a good chance of rain for the game and that would give the advantage to San Francisco, who has a much better rushing offense.

Because that field of Wembley Stadium in London is grass the Over may be a good pick. In a couple of interesting betting trends San Francisco has an Over record of 4-1 in their last 5 games played on grass and Denver has an Over record of 9-1 in their last 10 games on grass. However, if it rains those trends may not mean much.

The 49ers have a much better rushing offense and even with a new QB I think they will come out and play well on both sides of the ball, as San Francisco will win this game and cover the 1-point spread.

Pick: 49ers -1

One reply on “Broncos vs. 49ers Gambling Prediction Week 8 Odds”

Go 49er’s!!! Even though I am a Broncos Fan I can’t stand McDaniel’s and therefore I want the Broncos to lose so we can get rid of McDaniel’s ASAP!!! Then bring on a veteran coach such as Bill Cower!!!!!!!! Fire McDaniel’s!!!!! 49er’s are in a much better shape I think to win since they have been in London all week and have adjusted. The Broncos I think will struggle since they went over just on Thursday. I really want the Broncos to SUCK so we can get rid of McDaniel’s!!!! If the Broncos lose I am betting something will go on during their by week such as a firing 🙂 or at least McDaniel’s will seriously be in the hotseat even more. He is though allready in the hotseat.
