NFL WEEK 10 – BENGALS vs. STEELERS

If you can’t run with the big dogs, the expression goes, then stay on the porch.

In Cincinnati, the Bengals have shown through the first half of the NFL season that they are capable of keeping up with the big guns of the NFL. They stand at 6-2 and share the AFC North lead with the Steelers. Every one of their opponents this season, with the exception of the Browns, is now at .500 or better.

They are 4-0 in the division, and only two teams in the league have given up fewer points. Their running game with Cedric Benson is in better shape than any time since Corey Dillon went for more than 1,300 in 2002. QB Carson Palmer is healthy again.

Yet as fans in southern Ohio brace themselves for the most important game since the 2006 season playoffs, they know that doubt will seep in if they can’t seal the deal on Sunday at Pittsburgh. Games between two apparent dead-even teams usually result in the home team getting 3, but the Steelers are locked in as a 7-point favorite and the line hasn’t moved an inch since opening early this week.

Randy Scott, sportsbook manager at beted.com, says that the Bengals are one or two quality wins away from getting serious love from the betting community:

“The bettors can’t make up their mind about the Bengals,” says Scott. “Early they weren’t getting much action, and when the bettors jumped on them at home vs. Houston, they got burned. Against Chicago, however, the bettors backed them and won. But the bettors didn’t back the Bengals at home versus the Ravens. So far this week the action is split.”Sports Betting at Sportsbook.com

Perhaps the public is spooked by Pittsburgh’s resurgence. Those two early-season losses to Chicago and the Bengals grow smaller and smaller in the rear view mirror, and in their last two games (sandwiched around their bye) they own victories over Minnesota and Denver. While Pittsburgh has been a lousy cover team (3-5 ATS), the Steelers now own 5 straight wins SU and look like at least even money to make it to the Super Bowl again.

Pittsburgh’s defense, rejuvenated by the return of safety Troy Polamalu, has been wearing down teams in the second halves. Against Denver and Minnesota the Steelers dominated the fourth period, 28-7 total.

It was nearly three years ago when the Steelers defeated the Bengals in the playoffs, Pittsburgh’s Kimo von Oelhoffen pretty much nailing things down when he hit Palmer low and sending the QB to the operating table. The Bengals have through hell and back since that day, and they are finally ready again to make things interesting in the AFC North. And while von Oelhoffen is no longer on the Steeler roster, there is plenty to make this game one of the best regular-season matchups to date this year.
