NFL Division Preview – NFC West

In our quest to be the ONLINE LEADER in NFL Gambling & NFL Handicapping information we’re way out ahead of the rest with our 2010 Divisional Previews for all 8 NFL divisions.

We will be covering the entire off season for each team and giving you a preview of the upcoming 2010 season with updates from now through kickoff of Week 1 of the NFL 2010/2011 Season.

The lines are out for the early favorites to win each NFL Division and it is not too early to start considering your NFL Futures bets. After all, you just may find that your fave is good value right now.

The San Francisco 49ers are once again the sexy pick of the NFC West. Oddsmakers feel that this will be the year that they finally shed their underachieving reputation and will break through with a division championship.

The Arizona Cardinals lost Kurt Warner and Anquan Boldin, the Seahawks could be the surprise of the division and the Rams, well….. They are still the Rams.

San Francisco 49ers: -110

The San Francisco 49ers will hope to prey on a weak division and a good young crop of offensive talent to finally realize their division aspirations. The 49ers played well last year and Alex Smith finally has the benefit of going into the season as the unquestioned number one guy. Coach Mike Singletary has troubled players like Vernon David and Michael Crabtree acting like grown ups and playing to their potential. Smith, Crabtree, Davis and Josh Morgan are a formidable offensive force along with stud running back Frank Gore.

There are still a few holes that may rectify themselves in training camp. The offensive line was somewhat leaky last season and the defensive secondary was unable to stop anybody. If anyone can get this defense to step up, it is Mike Singletary. I am not quite ready to crown the 49ers NFC West champs yet but if they can avoid their annual underachieving there is no reason to think that they won’t emerge.

Arizona Cardinals: +225

No team in the NFL has lost more integral parts of their team than the Arizona cardinals. Kurt Warner retired and Anquan Boldin was shipped to Baltimore. Two huge pieces of the puzzle are gone and now the Cards have to rely on players with potential but ones who have not quite proven themselves yet. Larry Fitzgerald is still the best receiver in the game but questions surround Matt Leinart’s ability to get him the ball. Beanie Wells emerged as a good running back threat while Tim Hightower surfaced as a dangerous receiving threat out of the backfield. Again, Hightower’s success will depend on the effectiveness of Leinart.

The Cardinals defense improved immensely last year but melted down in the playoffs. I think that they are still a good squad but the departure of Carlos Dansby leaves a huge void on the defensive line. The defense should put together some decent games but the raised level of competition this year could see them slip a notch or two.

The Cards are the team that lost the most and gained the least in the offseason. I am steering clear of them. At +225, I don’t see them as a good bet at all – Leinart sucks!!!

Seattle Seahawks: +300

The Seattle Seahawks are perhaps the best value in NFL Futures at the present time.

Keep in mind that this team is only a few years removed from a Super Bowl appearance. Pete Carroll was hired to bring the winning tradition back to Seattle and by all accounts is doing a great job of getting players to buy into his system. Health is a big issue for the Hawks. If Matt Hasselbeck can stay healthy, the Hawks might have a chance to win the West.

The Seattle Seahawks had arguably the best draft of any team in the NFL. They were able to fill holes at Left tackle, at Safety and at Wide Receiver. They also acquired super slick Leon Washington from the Jets to bolster a weak running game. It is surprising that the oddsmakers don’t have them as better bets.

The Hawks had the worst pass defense in the NFL last year but were banged up all season on the defensive side of the ball. Health is key. If Seattle can stay healthy, they could be a sneaky pick to win the AFC West. Second place is more likely though.

St. Louis Rams: +1500

Sam Bradford and that’s about it. The St. Louis Rams have nobody else. A bet on the Rams is a waste of time. So is talking about them!

San Francisco is the team to beat and I think that they can be beaten. At -110, they are a risky bet based on their shaky past. Arizona is destined for failure this year. They were barely a playoff team last year and this year they lost six starters. Seattle could surprise. At +300 they could lead you to a big NFL futures pay day and win the NFC West.
