Ravens

Baltimore has a couple extra days of rest but must be still smarting from last week’s loss to Atlanta where their defense wilted at the end of the game.  They are tied with Pittsburgh in the NFC North but actually are a game up because they have beaten the Steelers already this season.  This year is shaping up as another trip to the postseason for this veteran squad and this week is a chance for an easy victory.

The talk out of Baltimore this week has been about opening up the offense and getting more throws down the field.  With the Ravens receiving corps containing more possession types than speedsters I am not sure if this is the most prudent strategy, especially against one of the better passing defenses, but it could mean a lot more scoring for the Ravens and a chance of easily zooming over the total.

These teams do not meet very often.  Their last encounter was a Carolina victory at Baltimore back in 2006.  The truth is Baltimore has never beaten the Panthers, something that is going to change on Sunday.  In looking at the spread the Ravens are just 2-3 ATS on the road this year compared to 4-0 at home.  10.5 points looks like a lot but the way Carolina is scuffling right now it seems very probable.

Panthers

With Buffalo winning last week Carolina is one of two teams in the league with a single victory so far (and to be honest the Bills are probably the better team).  Only one of those losses has been by less than double digits so the spread in this one is reflective of team performance even though it is rare to see double digit home underdogs in the NFL.  This team has a ton of injuries all over the roster making it difficult for them to compete.

Running back Mike Goodson should get the start again this week.  Last week he rushed more more than 100 yards and as long as he keeps doing that the Panthers won’t miss their feature back tandem too much.  In a shocking bit of news the starting QB will be Brian St. Pierre this week.  If you are catching yourself saying who, you are not the only one as he was a stay at home dad until last week and was surprisingly given the nod over rookie Tony Pike.  This situation does not look good for the Panthers against a tough Ravens defense.

Against a weaker opponent the Panthers might have been able to somehow patch this thing together enough to make it a game but with a QB with pretty much no experience it is hard to like the Panthers chances.  I think the Ravens are a good bet to cover but also like the over as I think Baltimore might be able to conquer it all by themselves.  They certainly are not going to get much help from Carolina.

The Pick: This is a great parlay opportunity if you like that sort of thing.  Take the Ravens and the over.
