Arizona Cardinals vs. Atlanta Falcons Preview

In one of the early games on Sunday in a NFC match up the Atlanta Falcons (0-1) host the Arizona Cardinals (1-0). The Cardinals won their first game of the season, but did not look doing so, as they fumbled the ball 4 times and their once dynamic offense could only muster 17 points against the St. Louis Lambs, sorry Rams.

The Falcons were also thought to have a good offense, but they only scored 9 points on 3 field goals failing to get a TD in their OT loss to the Steelers. The Falcons need to get in the win column, as their next 2 games are tough facing the defending Super Bowl champion Saints in the Big Easy next week and then hosting the San Francisco 49ers in 2 weeks.

In their opening games of the season the Falcons lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers 15-9 in OT and the Cardinals beat the St. Louis Rams 17-13.

Heading into this game the Cardinals are 1-0 ATS and the Falcons are 0-1 ATS.

With Kurt Warner gone and Matt Leinart released Derek Anderson is THE man under center for the Cardinals and while he did go 22/41 for 297 yards and 1 TD against the Rams he only led Arizona to 17 points. The Cardinals were 5/13 on 3rd down conversions and his big All Pro WR Larry Fitzgerald was held in check most of the game with 3 receptions for 43 yards, but did catch the game winner.

WR Steve Breston was solid with 7 grabs for 132 yards and the secondary of the Falcons, which gave up 211 yards to the Steelers, has to keep these guys in check and not allow them to make the big play down the field.

The Arizona RB duo of Tim Hightower and LaRod Stephens-Howling combined for 103 rushing yards with Beanie Wells out with a knee injury. Hightower did average a decent 4.2 yards per carry, but he also had 2 fumbles.

Wells is expected to play in this game, but Hightower will likely get most of the carries and he will have to hold onto the rock and not cough it up like he did against the Rams. Football betting

The Falcons played good run defense against the Steelers holding them to under 100 yards in regulation, but then gave up a 50 yard run in overtime, which cost them the game.

QB Matt Ryan, who was 27/44 for 252 yards in week 1, leads the Falcons but he could not lead Atlanta to the end zone and he was intercepted late in the 4th quarter. His main target of Roddy White had a good game with 13 receptions for 111 yards and he will have to play well against a mediocre Arizona secondary.

Former All Pro RB Michael Turner only had 42 yards last week averaging 2.2 yards per carry, but he was facing a solid Pittsburgh defense. He will have to play well in this game to take some pressure off Ryan.

The Arizona defense gave up 325 yards in their win over the Rams and while they were solid defending the run, only giving up 81 yards, they gave up 240 passing yards and that was facing rookie Sam Bradford.

Both of these teams had solid passing offenses last season, but neither looked that great in week 1. Whichever QB can move the chains has a great chance to give his team a win. Ryan will play well and be thankful he does not have to face the Pittsburgh D again and the Atlanta home field advantage will put them over the top, as the Falcons will get into the win column in this game and cover the 6-point spread.

Trends:

  • Arizona is 9-2 ATS in their last 11 games after getting more than 350 total yards in their previous game and they have an Under record in 7 of their last 10 games.
  • Atlanta is 6-2 ATS in their last 8 home games, 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games, and they have an Under record of 7-0 in their last 7 games.
  • In the last 8 meetings between these 2 teams the total has gone Over 7 times.

On the injury front Arizona WR Early Doucet is questionable for this game and for Atlanta S Erik Coleman and Michael Jenkins are both questionable for the game.

Pick: Falcons -6

He is anxiously waiting for the first NFL week when his beloved new-look Redskins take on the Cowboys, who is a team Jason has no love for, to say the least.
