Arizona Cardinals vs. Kansas City Chiefs Preview

This Sunday in a non-conference match up between a couple of struggling teams the Kansas City Chiefs (5-4) host the Arizona Cardinals (3-6). NFL lines have the Chiefs as 8-point favorites in this game with a total of 44.

Kansas City blew out of the gates winning their first 3 games, but since that time they have lost 4 of 6 including their last 2. Things are even worse in the desert for Arizona, who have dropped 4 in a row and were schooled at home last week by NFC West rival Seattle.

While Kansas City has struggled they are still undefeated at home this season (0-4) while Arizona has only won one game on the road (1-4).

In their last games the Cardinals were beat soundly by the Seattle Seahawks 36-18 and the Chiefs were killed by the Denver Broncos losing 49-29.

This season the Chiefs are 5-4 ATS and the Cardinals are 3-6 ATS. In the last 4 games between these 2 teams the home team has covered the spread every time.

You think the Cardinals miss Kurt Warner? Well, maybe just a little, as Arizona ranks 2nd to last in the league in total yards per game (289.1) and offensive touchdowns (13). They have not gotten good play from the QB position, as neither Derek Anderson nor Max Hall has played well. However, even in the loss to Seattle last week Anderson passed for 322 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT.

The Cardinals’ rushing offense ranks 29th in the league and in their last 2 games they failed to rush for over 55 yards. Tim Hightower and Beanie Wells have really struggled in the last few games and for the season Wells is only averaging 3.3 yards per carry. They will be facing a Chiefs’ rushing defense that ranks 12th in the league, but gave up 159 yards on the ground to the Broncos last week, who have the league’s worst rushing offense. Denver established the run early and the Chiefs have to keep Arizona from doing the same thing this Sunday. Football betting

While the Cardinals are having QB issues the same can’t be said about the Chiefs, as Matt Cassel is the league’s 12th rated QB and he has thrown 12 TD and only 1 INT in Kansas City’s last 5 games, but the Chiefs have only won 2 of those games. A perfect example is last week, as Cassel threw for a career-high 469 yards and 4 TD, but Kansas City still lost by 20 points.

The reason the Chiefs are doing much better than last season is their rushing offense, which is the top ranked unit in the NFL. The RB duo of Jamaal Charles (760 yards 2 TD) and Thomas Jones (573 yards 3 TD) have been solid this season, but they have struggled their last 2 games averaging 3.1 yards per carry 2 weeks ago in a loss to Oakland and 2.3 yards per carry last week against Denver. The running game should get on track against an Arizona run defense that only ranks 29th in the league. Also, the Chiefs were down early last week and had to play catch up through the air and they have to get back to running the ball.

To say the Cardinals are not playing well is a major understatement, as they do not rank in the top 25 in the league in passing and rushing offense or passing and rushing defense. The Chiefs will get back to the run in this game and Jones and Charles will rack up the rushing yards. Anderson may have another big game, in terms of numbers, but he will, once again, get no help from the rushing offense. Even though KC is 1-7-1 ATS in their last 9 games as a favorite they will dominate this game from the opening whistle, as they will easily win this game and cover the spread.

Betting Trends

Kansas City is 8-17 ATS in their last 25 home games and 1-9-1 ATS in their last 11 games as a favorite and Arizona is 2-6 ATS in their last 8 road games.
Kansas City has an Over record of 4-1 in their last 5 games and Arizona has an Over record of 7-1 in their last 8 games.

Pick: Chiefs -8
