2015 Eagles Preview & NFL Football Future Lines & Pick

2015 Philadelphia Eagles Season Predictions

Things certainly weren’t boring in Philadelphia this past offseason! The team wiped the slate clean, got rid of franchise running back LeSean McCoy and starting QB Nick Foles and their best receiver Jeremy Maclin left for Kansas City.

They brought in oft-injured QB Sam Bradford to compete for the starting job with Mark Sanchez and a seemingly impressive running back duo – DeMarco Murray and Ryan Matthews.

Chip Kelly obviously has a plan – not quite sure what it is. If Philadelphia doesn’t improve right away, if they don’t get at least 10 wins the heat will definitely be on. Keep in mind that the Eagles did go 10-6 the last two years before having their team virtually dismantled.

So where does all of the offseason craziness leave the Eagles at the end of this season? Let’s take a look.

2015 Eagles Season Preview

Chip Kelly is either a mad man or a genius – we will find out which one he is very soon. With so much turnover on both sides of the ball it is easy to envision this team going through their share of growing pains and to possibly struggle out of the gate. Will the players buy into what Kelly has in his brain or will the fans and players alike turn on their Coach?

Kelly didn’t get his coveted Marcus Mariota in the draft – you have to think that the QBs currently on his staff have to be a little miffed with the public pursuit of the Oregon star – but I digress!

Of concern for Bradford/Sanchez was the loss of both offensive guards in the offseason – Evan Mathis was released and Todd Herrmans signed with Indianapolis. It remains to be seen in Sam Bradford will even be ready for the start of the Regular season. There is also a question of whether or not Sam is a fit in Chip Kelly’s offense. Translation – the quarterback position is a huge X-factor for Philadelphia this year – at this point pessimism has eclipsed any sense of optimism that fans had after the big trade that shook up the Eagles. Reliable Jeremy Maclin and his 85 grabs for 1,318 yards and 10 TDs are gone leaving Jordan Matthews and Nelson Agholor and Zach Ertz as the QB’s primary targets – not all that flattering!

Now for the revamped running back situation. LeSean McCoy was traded for Kiko Alonso – not a terrible move on paper but a head-scratching one at that. DeMarco Murray steps in as a viable replacement but there are two factors that have many, including myself a little scared off. Firstly there is the fact that Murray is one year removed from a 393 carry, 449 touch campaign. Traditionally backs with heavy workloads struggle the year after – many are never the same. Secondly there is Murray’s injury history. He stayed healthy last year, miraculously, but that may have been a product of the blocking he received in Dallas. Don’t count on the Eagles O-line to be near that of the Cowboys. If Murray goes down Ryan Matthews will be there to pick up the slack – IF and that is a BIG IF he can stay healthy!

Simply put the moves at running back for Philadelphia were lateral, maybe even a small step back if you consider the injury history, the blocking schemes and the new system that both acquisitions will be forced to learn. I’m not sure about the Eagles running game – it scares me to death!

The running game will also look different because of the O-line tasked with blocking for the off-injured RB duo. Evan Mathis was released and Todd Herremans is also out – that’s two huge cogs on the O-line that the Eagles seemingly have no replacement for!

Now for the defense – a unit that didn’t go through as many changes but could have used a tweak or two in the offseason – they did rank 28th in yards allowed last season. The Eagles surrendered 25 points per game last season. Former Seahawk Byron Maxwell was a nice add but it remains to be seen if he can thrive covering the opponents #1 receiver. Phili drafted Eric Rowe – he is another nice piece but is unproven. Walter Thurmond and Brandon Boykin will fill out a secondary that did improve but is not without its own set of question marks.

Kiko Alonso was probably the most important add for Philadelphia in the offseason. He is young, athletic and could be a difference maker assuming that the injury that kept him out of the entire 2014 season is fully healed. The Eagles front seven should be OK with names like Mychal Kendricks, DeMeco Ryans, Fletcher Cox, Bennie Logan and Cedric Thornton returning.

Eagles 2015 Predictions:

The outlook for the Philadelphia Eagles is somewhat grim in my eyes – who knows when their starting QB will actually suit up and who knows how long the running backs will be able to stay on the field. Chip Kelly rolled the dice in a big way this past offseason on both sides of the ball – unpopular decisions were a theme the past six or so months. My guess is that it blows up in Kelly’s face – the Cowboys and the Giants both look like better teams in the NFC East.

I expect an 8-8 season for the Eagles this season and for the Phili faithful to come down hard on Chip Kelly’s “vision”.
