2014 NFL Draft Handicapping Tips – Chicago Bears

Chicago Bears

Chicago had another disappointing season last year. When Aaron Rodgers got hurt they could have burst to the head of the division but again the second half proved to be more treacherous than expected.

Bears 2014 NFL Draft Predictions

Heading into this draft the Bears look pretty set on the offensive side of the ball with Jay Cutler and the receivers looking very sharp last season under the tutelage of coach Marc Trestman. They have signed away DE Jarod Allen from rival Minnesota but it still looks like defense is where they should be looking for reinforcements. They have a number of players who are effective but this unit lacks any young stars.

An infusion of speed and size in the secondary probably makes the most sense. Maybe a linebacker or two as well.

S Deone Bucannon – Playing on defense you kind of get lost up at Washington State. Be that as it may Bucannon had a super productive career finishing among the program’s all time leader in tackles and interceptions while playing against some of the best team’s in America week after week. He has really good size and plays with an old school mentality that will play well in Chicago. He is not the fastest but if you want someone at the back end that will make receivers nervous he is your guy.

Other potential gets

RB Tre Mason – Matt Forte is a great all round back but he is more of a grinder. I would love to see Chicago add someone a little more shifty in the backfield to see if they can hit some home runs in the running game. At Auburn, Mason proved that he is both durable and hard to tackle, able to turn small creases into big gains. With an innovative coach like Trestman I think they could turn a guy like Mason into a star.

LB Kyle Van Noy – Lance Briggs isn’t getting any younger but I think they might find his replacement in a guy like this.  Van Noy gives you a little bit of everything with an ability to rush the passer as well as good ball skills. The one knock on him is that he is not the best overall athlete, but there is no doubt he is a player. In the third round or later he would be awesome value.

CB Jean Baptiste-Stanley – The Bears know first hand how valuable big cornerbacks can be. This Nebraska product is among the biggest on the board and has shown the kind of ball skills you would expect from a former receiver. Despite size and length he is not a great run defender but again that could be because he grew up playing mostly offense. He is a bit of a project but one worth taking on.
