2014 Jacksonville Jaguars Schedule | Season Handicapping Picks

NFL Football Jags Analysis

One of my favorite tools in preparing for the 2014 NFL season and to enhance your NFL wagering knowledge is to look ahead at each team’s regular-season schedule and evaluate the games they will play. Without further ado, the last contender from the AFC South division: the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Jaguars Odds [dfads params=’groups=63740&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]
Odds to win the 2015 Super Bowl XLIX: 250/1
Odds to win the 2015 AFC Conference: 110/1
Season Win Total: 5 wins

Sun, Sept. 7 @ Philadelphia

Jacksonville added Chris Clemons, Ziggy Hood and Red Bryant to the defensive line in the off-season; they’ll be tested in Week 1 at Philly when they’ll have to wrap up top-tier RB LeSean McCoy.

Sun, Sept. 14 @ Washington

The Jags take a mini-tour of the NFC East to start their regular season. The Redskins (but who knows for how long) should be a winnable game if QB Robert Griffin III is still shaking off a sophomore slump.

Sun, Sept. 21 INDIANAPOLIS

Competitive and deep-pocketed Jags owner Shad Khan will want to see notable improvement against the league’s elite teams in 2014. The home opener against division royalty Indianapolis – if the home team can make it interesting – would be a great start.

Sun, Sept. 28 @ San Diego

Chargers veteran QB Philip Rivers is having a late-career renaissance, which will put pressure on a young Jacksonville secondary anchored by CB Alan Ball. They’re young, but second-year players CB Dwayne Gratz and S Jonathan Cyprien seem like the real deal, also.

Sun, Oct. 5 PITTSBURGH

This isn’t your Steelers team from four or five years ago. The young, rebuilding Jags could strike while the iron is hot here, and try and melt Steel.

Sun, Oct. 12 @ Tennessee

If Jacksonville is to make notable improvement, it must continue to fare well against Houston and Tennessee inside its own division (of the Jags’s three wins in the second half of ’13, three of them came against those two AFC South clubs).

Sun, Oct. 19 CLEVELAND

The Jags also beat the Browns last season, but that was before Johnny Football-Mania swept the shores of Lake Erie. Incumbent QB Brian Hoyer might still be under center for Cleveland by this point in the year, but fans – even in Florida likely – will still be chanting for Manziel.

Sun, Oct. 26 MIAMI

Dolphins field general Ryan Tannehill needs to produce in 2014. He got a fair-sized leash as he switched positions from WR to QB, but he needs to show something in his third season for fear of turning into the next Blaine Gabbert. That’s something Jaguars fans will shudder about.

Sun, Nov. 2 @ Cincinnati

The Jacksonville defense will likely encounter difficulty trying to cover Cincy WR A.J. Green and TE Jermaine Gresham. They form a dynamic duo for the Bengals.

Sun, Nov. 9 DALLAS (in London, UK)

Pigskin fans from over the pond have rather adopted the Jags as their own; with Jacksonville owner Khan also under stewardship of London soccer club Fulham, one wonders whether there might eventually be full-time “American” football in the United Kingdom.

Week 11 BYE

Sun, Nov. 23 @ Indianapolis

Toby Gerhart, Jacksonville’s new starting RB, doesn’t have much mileage on his odometer (previously backing up Adrian Peterson in Minnesota) and employs a powerful style of running that might give the Colts defense fits.

Sun, Nov. 30 N.Y. GIANTS

The G-Men seem to be at a crossroads, so Jacksonville would hope to take advantage of that. Improvement is improvement in whatever form it comes for this franchise.

Sun, Dec. 7 HOUSTON

An important game as a barometer for the Jaguars. Houston was a total mess last season, but the Texans should be much improved so if Jacksonville can give them a stressful game, score it a win for the black-and-teal.

Sun, Dec. 14 @ Baltimore

Former stud Ravens RB Ray Rice was fat in 2013 (was playing at 5″8, 225 lbs) and that robbed him of his explosiveness. He’s lost 15 lbs in the off-season, so he’ll hope to be an impact player once again this year.

Thurs, Dec. 18 TENNESSEE

Jacksonville surprised a ton of people when it selected QB Blake Bortles from UCF with its top pick. The Jags envision training Bortles up the old-fashioned way, would should do wonders for his development. However, this point of the year might be an intriguing time to give him some snaps and see how it turns out.

Sun, Dec. 28 @ Houston

The Jags finish the 2014 campaign in east Texas, and the Texans are lacking the one major component in the modern NFL (a franchise QB). With apologies to veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick, you’re going to take the good with the bad with that player. Jacksonville might just end the season with a victory.
