2011 Regular Season Opponents

Sun, Sept. 11 @ Baltimore For the Steelers, the first week of the 2011 regular season gets started in spectacular fashion. Both these teams were 12-4 in the division last year and both sport great running backs and great run defense. What – or who – will flinch first? Downright tantalizing!

Sun, Sept. 18 SEATTLE The Seahawks surprised everyone in 2010 with their success, but looking at their roster, the air has to come out of that balloon at some point. You have to like the ’Burgh here at home.

Sun, Sept. 25 @ Indianapolis Pittsburgh’s early-season schedule is simply filled with great ballgames. This is a priceless AFC match-up, which will be much more thrilling if Peyton Manning’s offense is healthier than it was last season.

Sun, Oct. 2 @ Houston The Steelers’ pass defense was a little bit more vulnerable than the run-stuffing or the blitzing last season, but it’s still in the upper half of NFL rankings and still boasts an excellent CB in Ike Taylor. There will be at least one man to blanket WR Andre Johnson, who is Houston’s best player and probably the best at his position in the entire league.

Sun, Oct. 9 TENNESSEE The Titans are good enough to pull an upset if their offensive line gets particularly nasty, but there’s really no reason Pittsburgh shouldn’t be able to handle the visitors.

Sun, Oct. 16 JACKSONVILLE These two teams play a similar style, but the Steelers do it a lot better.

Sun, Oct. 23 @ Arizona The re-match of Super Bowl XLIII isn’t as compelling these days; Pittsburgh is the same old juggernaut team, but the Cardinals suck now.

Sun, Oct. 30 NEW ENGLAND The last week of October brings a game that every pro football fan should be aware of. The two most successful pivots of the last decade (Ben Roethlisberger and New England’s Tom Brady) in a showdown for bragging rights near the top of the AFC’s heap.

Sun, Nov. 6 BALTIMORE Steel City gets the hated Ravens at home this time; it is a worrisome game for Steelers fans because Baltimore QB Joe Flacco is such a wildcard. He is still learning how to be consistently great at the top level, but when he plays like it, he takes the Ravens to the next stratosphere.

Sun, Nov. 13 @ Cincinnati Cincy’s beleaguered fans hate the Steelers with all their might, but despite this being divisional, Pittsburgh might see this one as a bit of a comedown game after consecutive weeks of New England and Baltimore.

Sun, Nov. 20 BYE

Sun, Nov. 27 @ Kansas City Pittsburgh’s “D” is characteristically strong, but it will be interesting to see if KC’s speed can produce any chinks in the armor.

Sun, Dec. 4 CINCINNATI The Bengals and Cleveland – usually the bottom-feeders of the AFC North – bring spirit (if nothing else) in their games against the big black and yellow bully on the block.

Thurs, Dec. 8 CLEVELAND Browns RB Peyton Hillis has a Jerome Bettis-esque style of running; he’s the type of a player the Steelers would normally love to feature, but instead must risk head trauma in trying to tackle him. The short rest this week surely won’t help matters – bring on the cortisone shots!

Mon, Dec. 19 @ San Francisco The Niners are an enigmatic bunch that will definitely be motivated in front of the national TV audience, which at the very least leaves the outcome of this one as a crap shoot.

Sat, Dec. 24 ST. LOUIS Pitt’s third consecutive non-Sunday game is at home versus a young team trying to find its legs and identity in the Rams. Young St. Louis pivot Sam Bradford is good enough to come into Pennsylvania and put up a huge day, but the odds are against it.

Sun, Jan. 1 @ Cleveland This would be a very happy New Year’s for Browns fans, if they can grab a win in the Dawg Pound.
