2011 Regular Season Opponents

Sun, Sept. 11 DALLAS Tony Romo and the Dallas offense have a lot to prove after last season, but if any team can stifle these aims, it’s the Jets and their stingy defense.

Sun, Sept. 18 JACKSONVILLE New York was third in the league in rushing yards allowed last year, which is important because tackling Jaguars RB Maurice Jones-Drew is like trying to wrap up a bowling ball.

Sun, Sept. 25 @ Oakland Consecutive weeks of run-heavy opponents, but Oakland is at least as manageable (if not more so) as Jacksonville. The Jets could very well start the 2011 campaign 3-0.

Sun, Oct. 2 @ Baltimore You can bet head coach Rex Ryan and Co. will circle this contest on the calendar as one of the first true tests of the regular season. This one should be a dogfight.

Sun, Oct. 9 @ New England The schedule gods have ratcheted it up a notch for the Jets in October – the month’s second game pits the two teams that always scrap for divisional supremacy.

Mon, Oct. 17  MIAMI Both of these defenses can pitch goose-eggs on the scoreboard, but often in these games, some unanticipated breakdown happens and one side breaks through. My money is on the Jets doing that.

Sun, Oct. 23 SAN DIEGO This clash is a battle of two super-athletic tight ends; one with plenty of publicity and street cred (San Diego’s Antonio Gates) and one that is still getting there (New York’s Dustin Keller).

Sun, Oct. 30 BYE

Sun, Nov. 6 @ Buffalo Bills QB Ryan Fitzpatrick surprised some with how well he played last season – given the bleak circumstances in western New York – but he’s still probably not striking fear in the cholesterol-laden heart of Rex Ryan.

Sun, Nov. 13 NEW ENGLAND Tom Brady and the Pats travel to the new Meadowlands this time. The Jets should be confident they can beat the Pats, provided they control the game in terms of ball possession and limiting big plays.

Thurs, Nov. 17 @ Denver Even on short rest, this is a road trip that New York should finish productively.

Sun, Nov. 27 BUFFALO Unless New York pivot Mark Sanchez reverts back to rookie-like play, you have to like the Jets’ chances versus the Bills. A liberal serving of RB Shonn Greene will help the effectiveness of targets like Keller and WR Santonio Holmes.

Sun, Dec. 4 @ Washington There are a cluster (yes, that means three out of four) of other NFC East teams that the Jets should be more worried about playing than the Redskins. That fact bodes well for a December road game.

Sun, Dec. 11 KANSAS CITY Dwayne Bowe, KC’s main receiving target, will doubtlessly be blanketed by elite CB Darrelle Revis. This means fast-twitch RB Jamaal Charles must have a big day for the Chiefs to pull an upset.

Sun, Dec. 18 @ Philadelphia What I said mere moments ago, referring to DC… yes, the Philadelphia Eagles are one of those NFC East teams I wouldn’t care to play. This has the makings of an excellent game.

Sat, Dec. 24 NEW YORK GIANTS The Meadowlands nemeses clash amid a mist of George Washington Bridge traffic, New York Yankees tattoos and veal parmigianas. Both NYC-area teams are capable of grabbing the bragging rights, so this is one you won’t want to miss.

Sun, Jan. 1 @ Miami With improved quarterback play and a hope and a prayer along the path, the Dolphins could be playing meaningful games down the stretch. The ’Phins bring enough players to the discussion that beating them in south Florida could be a tall order, especially if the Jets are focused on the postseason.
