N.Y. Giants Betting Odds – NFL Football Futures

The New York Giants are a difficult team to figure out – they have good players at every position but lack greatness in any one area. Eli Manning is OK – certainly not elite, and the running backs have proven decent at times.

A look at the numbers:

Last season – 10-6 SU, 7-9 ATS
Projection this season – 9-7 (3rd in NFC East)
Giants Super Bowl XLVI Odds: +1500
Giants 2011/12 NFC Odds – +275
2011 Giants NFC East Lines – +180

They have some tremendous talent at Wide Receivers and some good pieces on the defensive side of the ball. Yet this team has missed the playoffs for two straight seasons and enters the 2011 season having not significantly upgraded in any area of the game.

Tom Coughlin returns as well despite his “lame duck “status since their Super Bowl year. It looks on first glace that it will be more of the same in 2011 – not good enough in the competitive New York Football market.

The Giants will once again depend on Eli Manning to run what could be an explosive offense. Manning had 4,000-plus passing yards for the second straight year and a career-high 31 touchdowns but threw for career high 31 interceptions.

Quietly, he has become a good leader but is far from the elite pivot that the Giants envisioned when they signed him to a $100 million contract.

Overrated? Maybe!

Still, Manning will have Hakeem Nicks, and Mario Manningham at his disposal should be enough to bring some success. Super Blocker and reliable outlet Tight End Kevin Boss is gone as is three quarters of an offensive line that had been together for four solid years. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Ahmad Bradshaw resigned with the team after testing a rather soft free agent market. He and Brandon Jacobs offer yet “more of the same”. Although 2058 combined yards and 17 combined touchdowns last season, fumbles were an issue last season as was inconsistency for the backs. Like so many in New York, it is put up or shut up time for this running game.

New York’s defense was OK last season and could be better this season if Osi Umenyiora gets over his snit and reports to camp. This unit can get to the quarterback (5th best 46 sacks last season) and they did generate a league best 39 turnovers. Hopes are that by drafting Prince Amukamara some of the Secondary woes from last season will have righted themselves. (But now he’s injured, so who knows how that shakes out)

The Giants will have to drastically improve on Special Teams – they were near the bottom of the NFL in almost every Special Teams categories last season.

They and the Chargers were enormously affected by brutal Special Teams play.

New York Giants NFC East Prediction

The New York Giants looked like a pretty decent sleeper pick to come out of the NFC East but then the teams around them drastically improved while the G-Men decided to go with “more of the same”. Because of their inability to dramatically improve through Free Agency, I am afraid that “more of the same” should follow the Giants ’til the end of the season.

9-7 and third place in the NFC East sounds about right.
