With the bowl season winding down, chatter about who’s staying behind at the college level and who’s declaring for the NFL draft is on the rise. Let’s have a look at some noteworthy players and catch up on their statuses.

ANDREW LUCK, QUARTEBACK, STANFORD

Current Status: staying in school

The projected first overall NFL draft pick appears to have chosen another year at Stanford over the Carolina Panthers. I have to wonder, though – now that Jim Harbaugh has left for San Francisco, is there any way the 49ers can coax the Panthers into trading the top pick and convince Luck to declare?

RYAN MALLETT, QUARTERBACK, ARKANSAS

Current Status: declaring for NFL draft

Ryan Mallett, the big signalcaller from Arkansas, announced this week that he’s turning pro. Is he a potential top-five pick, especially with Luck staying behind?

CAMERON NEWTON, QUARTERBACK, AUBURN

Current Status: unknown

We likely won’t find out anything from Heisman Trophy winner Cameron Newton until after the BCS Championship. Perhaps if he wins it all he’ll feel there’s nothing left to accomplish in college.

BLAINE GABBERT, QUARTERBACK, MISSOURI

Current Status: declaring for NFL draft

Is this the new projected No. 1 overall draft pick? Scouts already had Gabbert bumped up as high as second in the quarterback rankings and we know that Carolina has thought about taking another quarterback. But would Gabbert be an overrated top pick?

MARK INGRAM, RUNNING BACK, ALABAMA

Current Status: declaring for NFL draft

Mark Ingram, the 2009 Heisman Trophy winner, is making the smart move and turning pro before his body takes any more punishment. Will the power runner be a first-round pick or are running backs a dime a dozen now?

LAMICHAEL JAMES, RUNNING BACK, OREGON

Current Status: staying in school

James, who has a 3.01 grade-point average, cares about his education. He announced in December that he wants to finish his degree before leaving Oregon. How much money is he leaving on the table? The nation’s leading rusher could have a lot of wear on his tires if he spends another year as the Ducks’ featured back.

JULIO JONES, WIDE RECEIVER, ALABAMA

Current Status: declaring for NFL draft

The tough Crimson Tide receiver played through pain this year to top 1,100 yards and will have plenty of suitors early in the 2011 draft.

A.J. GREEN, WIDE RECEIVER, GEORGIA

Current Status: declaring for NFL draft

The 6’4” beast missed the first four games of 2010 but still finished with 57 catches for 848 yards and nine scores. He could be the first receiver taken and could be a very high pick.

MARCELL DAREUS, DEFENSIVE LINEMAN, ALABAMA

Current Status: declaring for NFL draft

Could Dareus, who starred in Alabama’s BCS title game win over Texas last year, be a top-10 pick? Some people believe the dominant pass rusher will be.

JANORIS JENKINS, CORNERBACK, FLORIDA

Current Status: declaring for NFL draft

Jenkins’ status may be subject to change? He’s recovering from a torn labrum. He may get more money if he returns to Florida healthy and has one more big year in college before declaring.

PATRICK PETERSON, CORNERBACK, LSU

Current Status: undecided

Peterson projects as a very high first-rounder, likely the first defensive back to be chosen. As of Monday, he said he hasn’t yet decided if he’s declaring. Is there a team that needs him more desperately than the Houston Texans?
