2011 Regular Season Opponents

Sun, Sept. 11 @ Tampa Bay This season opener for the Lions is the story of two young teams on an upward plane, yet Tampa seems a little more sure of its footing.

Sun, Sept. 18 KANSAS CITY Running back Jahvid Best, WR Calvin Johnson and DT Ndamukong Suh for the Lions, RB Jamaal Charles and WR Dexter McCluster for the Chiefs – lots of eye-popping potential for football fans that like fast-twitch action in this one.

Sun, Sept. 25 @ Minnesota Is Detroit pivot Matt Stafford going to put the injuries behind him, “pull his thumb out” and finally start producing like a man befitting his paycheck? Playing another team with QB woes would be a great time to showcase this, Mr. Stafford.

Sun, Oct. 2 @ Dallas When the Cowboys offense is clicking, they can hurt you in many different ways. Detroit’s defense (minus DT Suh) is only average, so it has to keep everything in front of it.

Mon, Oct. 10 CHICAGO Detroit? At home? On MNF? Yes, this is not a misprint.

Sun, Oct. 16 SAN FRANCISCO The Lions will inevitably encounter some tough divisional games, so a good season is dependent on Motown seizing the manageable games on the slate – like the Niners at home.

Sun, Oct. 23 ATLANTA The third consecutive home game for Detroit in October is easily the most daunting task.

Sun, Oct. 30 @ Denver After clashing with the superb Falcons, even a game in the thin air at Mile High is a welcome foot off the gas for the slowly-evolving Lions.

Sun, Nov. 6 BYE

Sun, Nov. 13 @ Chicago For tough inter-divisional road games, Detroit must find someone other than Johnson who can break a game open. And no, the answer is certainly not QB Shaun Hill.

Sun, Nov. 20 CAROLINA Detroit is looking to take the next step in the rebuilding process; the schedule gods have actually been rather kind to the Lions with some relative powder-puffs in 2011.

Thurs, Nov. 24 GREEN BAY How much is there really to be thankful for, with the defending champions coming to town on Turkey Day?

Sun, Dec. 4 @ New Orleans In a town with great jazz and blues music, will Detroit be singing the Blues in trying to contain the Saints’ volatile passing attack? More than likely.

Sun, Dec. 11 MINNESOTA The Bears are very good and the Packers are excellent, so Motown must snatch its limited chances and prey on Minny, while the Lions can.

Sun, Dec. 18 @ Oakland Hopefully first-round DT Nick Fairley can help the run-stuffers in Detroit’s front seven, because they’ll see plenty between-the-tackles versus the Raiders.

Sat, Dec. 24 SAN DIEGO I don’t think any secondary in the NFL is warm to the idea of playing Chargers QB Philip Rivers indoors.

Sun, Jan. 1 @ Green Bay Under Armor, balaclavas and extra gloves will be on the “to pack” list in this final road game. An improbable upset to finish the regular season would definitely warm the Lions’ hearts, however.
