KC Chiefs Betting Odds – NFL Football Futures

The Chiefs surprised a lot of people last season by winning the AFC West last season, but even though they have a pretty season early season schedule they face many tough teams outside of the division.

A look at the numbers:

Last season – 10-6 SU, 9-7 ATS
Projection this season – 8-8 (3rd in AFC West)
Chiefs Super Bowl XLVI Odds: +3000
Chiefs 2011/12 AFC Odds – +1500
2011 Chiefs AFC West Lines – +350

Matt Cassel had a solid season at QB tossing 27 TD with only 7 INT. KC only ranked 30th in passing offense, but that may improve this season with the addiction of 1st round draft pick WR Jonathan Baldwin being teamed with breakout star WR Dwayne Bowe (1,162 yards 15 TD last season).

The strength of the Chiefs will be their rushing offense, which led the NFL last season averaging 164.2 rushing yards per game. Jamaal Charles (1,467 yards) and Thomas Jones (896 yards) form a formidable backfield and teams will stack the line to stop these guys all season long.

The team fell apart in the playoffs last season when Charles left the game with an injury and the big question for KC is can the team win when Cassel has to do it all?

The Chiefs have the tools to have a good all around offense, as they cannot only rely on the rushing offense to carry them.

Rodney Hudson leads a solid offensive line and they are good at both protecting the QB and especially at open up holes for the running game. However, they are not deep in the O line so they need to stay healthy. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

The defense was much improved last season ranking 17th defending the pass and 14th defending the run. OLB Tamba Hali emerged as one of the best pass rushers in the AFC last season and S Eric Berry and CB Brandon Flowers are solid, but the playoffs showed the Chiefs need help defending the pass. That is why the team took DE Justin Houston and DE Allen Bailey with their 2 3rd round draft picks.

DE Tyson Jackson was a first round pick in 2009 and he has been disappointment and if he can come back and have a good season the Chiefs D will be even better than last season.

The Chiefs need to get off to a good start this season and they only face one team that had a winning record last season in their first 4 games. However, they play tough out of division games against the Colts, Patriots, Steelers, Bears, Jets, and Packers. While the early season schedule is pretty easy only one team they face in their last 7 games finished last season with a sub .500 record.

HOW IT STANDS NOW

I am not totally sold on the Chiefs, as they play a very tough 2nd half schedule and they still have issues with their passing offense. Charles is invaluable to the team and if he goes down they may be in trouble.

The Chiefs will not sneak up on anybody this season so they have their work cut out for them.
