NFL Week 8 Preview

We have reached the halfway point of the 2010-11 NFL season as we enter Week 8, and the divisions are taking shape. My pick for Game of the Week is Minnesota at New England.  This should be an epic battle between two of the NFL’s all-time best quarterbacks.

Here I take a look at the NFL Betting matchups, giving you some early insight that will help make your 2010 NFL wagers winners.

Teams with byes this week are Atlanta, Chicago, Cleveland, NY Giants, Philadelphia, and Baltimore.

SUN, OCT 31 TIME (ET)

Miami at Cincinnati 1:00 PM CBS – The Fins are 0-3 at home, and 3-0 on road. The last team to do that was the 1982 St. Louis Cardinals. They are coming off controversial loss to Steelers, and will now face a banged-up secondary in Cincinnati. The Bengals have lost three straight for first time since 2008 while Carson Palmer threw for 412 yards — second-highest total in career — during loss in Atlanta last time out. Fins roll Cincy in this one.

Jacksonville at Dallas 1:00 PM CBS- Dallas off to its worst start since 1989 and it could get worse as they will start QB Jon Kitna who hasn’t started a game since Oct. 5, 20. Meanwhile, Jacksonville QB David Garrard will return after missing previous game recovering from concussion. All four games in this series have been decided by a TD or less. The Jags will want to head into their bye week with a big win in D-land. With a solid effort from RB Maurice Jones-Drew, Jacksonville wins.

Washington at Detroit 1:00 PM FOX – The Lions’ win over Washington in 2009 snapped a 19-game losing streak and with the return of QB Matthew Stafford expected to play for first time since season opener, Detroit could be poised for its second win of the season. Washington QB Donovan McNabb has thrown at least a touchdown in each of last five games, but has at least an interception in each as well. The Lions could put one in the win column in Motor City, but they will need to pin down McNabb.

Buffalo at Kansas City 1:00 PM CBS – Bills QB Ryan Fitzpatrick is coming off a career high in yards passing and TDs in an OT loss to Ravens, as Buffalo remains the only winless team in the NFL. They now try to stop RB Jamaal Charles and the Chiefs’ No. 1 rushing attack with the league’s worst run defense. For the Chiefs, there won’t be anything scary about Buffalo in this Halloween match up.

Carolina at St. Louis 1:00 PM FOX – The Rams are 3-0 at home and will look to get back on the rails after one-point loss at Tampa Bay last week.  QB Sam Bradford threw two TD passes in the first half last week, but was held to 56 yards passing in second half. The Panthers are 0-2 on road, but beat the beat the 49ers 23-20 in their last outing, as QB Matt Moore passed for season-high 308 yards. RB DeAngelo Williams has been limited by foot injury, while Steven Jackson became the Rams’ leading rusher last week and has three consecutive 100-yard games. This game will be won on the ground so this goes to St. Louis.

Green Bay at NY Jets 1:00 PM FOX –Rodgers and Jets QB Mark Sanchez have the rare distinction of being the only players to replace Brett Favre. Now the two young talents will go at it in this one as the Packers visit the new Meadowlands for the first time. The Packers have been hit hard by injuries with six starters out, including WR Santonio Holmes, suspended for four games for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. New York thrashed the Packers back in Dec. of 2006, but that won’t happen this time.

Denver at San Francisco 1:00 PM CBS – The two teams will met at England’s Wembley Stadium, a place that has hosted some of the greatest football players on the international stage. That’s’ soccer for you Yanks. Too bad our cousins across the pond will have to witness the debacle that is the 49’ers. However, they will get a fantastic aerial display as Orton lights up the scoreboard with his passing attack as the Broncos get a win at Wembley.

Tennessee at San Diego 4:05 PM CBS – The Chargers have the NFL’s top-ranked offense and defense yet have a losing record because of 18 turnovers, one more than they committed all of last year. They’ve lost 12 fumbles and QB Philip Rivers has thrown six interceptions. Titans’ receiver Kenny Britt had a career day against the Eagles with seven catches for 225 yards. It was the best performance by a receiver in the NFL this season. The Titans have the run game that the Chargers used to have and that will be the difference.

Tampa Bay at Arizona 4:15 PM FOX – Buccaneers CB Ronde Barber is set to play in his 200th career game, but can the veteran’s legs keep pace with Cards WR Larry Fitzgerald for a full 60 minutes? It may not matter as the Cardinals have thrown just three TD passes this season, none since week three, while rookie QB Max Hall has yet to throw one. I expect to see some wide-open football as neither team brings any real strength to the party. It could go either way.

Minnesota at New England 4:15 PM FOX – This has all the right ingredients to be a benchmark showdown between two of the league’s most talented veteran quarterbacks, and possibly of all-time. The teams face each other for first time since the Patriots traded WR Randy Moss to Minnesota on Oct. 6. The Pats’ Tom Brady goes for his 24th straight regular-season win at home as starter. Only Minnesota’s Brett Favre has more, 25 with Green Bay. A hobbled Favre is hoping to extend his NFL-record streak of 291 consecutive games started, 315 including playoffs, despite two fractures in his left ankle. Moss has 12 catches and two touchdowns in three games with Minny, while RB Adrian Peterson has five TDs in last five games and is second in NFL with 684 yards rushing. If the Vikings can mix in the power of Peterson, they should win the Battle of Foxboro.

Seattle at Oakland 4:15 PM FOX – Raiders RB Darren McFadden rushed for 165 yards last week and tied the franchise record with four TDs, as Oakland pounded the Broncos 59-14. Now they will face the Seahawks who are allowing just 3.3 yards per carry, second best mark in the NFL. To make matters worse, the Raiders have not won consecutive games since the end of 2008 season. With a pass defense sufficient to shut down Seahawks QB Matt Hasselbeck, and a rushing attack good enough to challenge the Seattle front four, I look for the Raiders to win.

Pittsburgh at New Orleans 8:20 PM NBC – The defending Super Bowl champ’s secondary will need to have a good day as they face Steelers’ QB Ben Roethlisberger, who needs just 139 yards to become the second Steelers quarterback, behind the legendary Terry Bradshaw, to reach 20,000 yards passing. Big Ben will get some help from WR Hines Ward who has TD catches in two straight games and last week had his second 100-yard receiving game this season. Meanwhile, QB Drew Brees reached 20,327 yards passing last week, becoming the second Saints QB behind Archie Manning to reach 20,000. The Steelers have the better defense so New Orleans could get in trouble if they get caught napping in this one.

MON, NOV 1 TIME (ET)

Houston at Indianapolis 8:30 PM – Indy QB Peyton Manning is expected to make 199th consecutive start, the second-longest active streak among quarterbacks behind Brett Favre. Well rested from their bye week the Texans will try to sweep the Colts for the first time in nine seasons. They will rely heavily on RB Arian Foster who is second in the AFC, including a franchise-record 231 yards in a season opening win over Indy. The Texans are 2-0 on road, and one of six NFL teams with perfect road record, and if Texans QB Matt Schaub can hook up often with WR Andre Johnson and TE Owen Daniels, spreading the Indy defense, they just might keep that streak alive.
