Let’s take a look at the numbers:

Last season – 8-8 SU, 6-10 ATS
Projection this season – 7-9 (third in AFC South)

It’s hard not to like Jeff Fisher, who until late September and October seemed to be able to squeeze every last ounce of production out of a team that didn’t have all that much talent. It caught up with him in 2009, though, and the Titans never completely recovered from that hide-the-children 0-6 start.

Fisher’s reluctance to replace Kerry Collins with Vince Young – even in the face of a 59-0 loss to New England – says volumes about the Titans’ feelings about Young, and even after leading the team to 8 wins in its final 10 games, there are questions about whether VY should be under center in Nashville for the next decade. Scrambling quarterbacks have a short shelf life in today’s NFL, as Tim Tebow is finding out.

No doubt Young (10 TDs, 7 INTs last season) benefitted last season from being able to turn and hand off to the league’s leading rusher, Chris Johnson, but no one seems to know if Johnson – who thinks about his next contract morning, noon and night – will have his head on straight this year.

Without an effective CJ, VY could be exposed as just another quarterback.

Defensively, training camp this season has been all about stopping the pass, something the Titans did worse than any team in the AFC last season. Not having Albert Haynesworth around probably saved Fisher’s stomach lining, but it did nothing to improve a pass rush.

Without anyone to collapse the pocket [vital in an AFC South that includes Peyton Manning and Matt Schaub], Tennessee drafted edge rusher Derrick Morgan. But the Tennessee D is not the beast it was a few years ago, and there are not a lot of playmakers.

One fun thing to watch for this season is when boxer/football player LeGarrette Blount goes Manny Pacquiao on an opponent in a regular season game (he’s done it once already in an exhibition). Opponents will push Blount’s buttons early and often.

THE WAY IT LOOKS NOW – The Titans are in a creaky boat. If anything happens to Johnson and Young is asked to win games with his arm, it could get very ugly very quickly.

But the early-season schedule is doable, with the first four games (Oakland, Pittsburgh, at New York Giants and Denver) against non-playoff teams and home-heavy.
