Let’s take a look at the numbers:

Last season – 9-7 SU, 5-10-1 ATS
Projection this season – 8-8 (third in NFC North)

Tough pre-season for coach Mike Tomlin. With Ben Roethlisberger out for at least the first four weeks of the regular season, Tomlin has to get Roethlisberger enough practice reps to be ready for the comeback week and still prepare Byron Leftwich for any games before the party boy returns to action.

Much has changed since the Steelers missed the playoffs in 2009 after winning the Super Bowl the previous season, but two things remain constant – the defensive line is the best in the league at stopping the run, and the offensive line leaks likes a sieve. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Unless the O-line line gets a lot better the Steelers will again miss the playoffs, but there were encouraging signs last weekend in an exhibition win over the Giants.

Two of the Steelers’ top offensive weapons – wideout Santonio Holmes and running back Willie Parkers – were let go in the off-season re-tooling. Holmes was just a bad actor and the Steelers had enough of him, and the team was anxious to turn the primary ball-carrying duties over to much-younger Rashard Mendenhall. It was time.

It’s on defense where Pittsburgh has earned its spurs, and the D-line’s continued dominance makes life fat and happy for a slew of playmakers in the back 7 – among them LaMarr Woodley, James Harrison and Troy Polamalu.

If Polamalu is anywhere near healthy after missing a good chunk of the 2009 season with an injury, the Steelers could be the toughest team in the league to score on.

Moving the ball will be a problem, though, and the game of musical chairs at the quarterback position doesn’t help. No team in NFL history has dealt with this type of issue before, and if the Steelers can do it successfully, they can make life tough for Baltimore and Cincinnati in the AFC North. If not, another visit to third place is probable.

THE WAY IT LOOKS NOW – It comes down to this: Do you trust Leftwich, who has never shown to be any more than a journeyman, to get the team off to a quick start? If Pittsburgh is 4-0 or 3-1, do you then bench him and play Roethlisberger?

No matter who is the quarterback come mid-October, one thing the Steelers have to do better is protect the ball.

They were minus-3 in turnover ratio last season, which helped explain their mediocre record.
