Let’s take a look at the numbers:

Last season – 3-13 SU, 6-10 ATS
Projection this season – 6-10 (third in NFC South)

The best thing that can be said about the Buccaneers’ 2009 season is that it’s over, and from here on in it’s all about letting some young, talented players grow into their games and figure out what the NFL is all about.

TB was a smelly 3-13 last season, and if you include that “home” game in London, the Bucs were 1-7 at home with six of the defeats in double digits.

But that was then and this is now, and the Bucs have enough talent to make a modest step up in the NFC South, even if a playoff berth is out of the question.

For one thing, the Bucs should be able to move the chains better now that Josh Freeman has the QB job from the get-go. Freeman is a mobile QB who needs to get more comfy in the pocket, but that will come as he gets acclimated to rookie receivers Arrelious Benn and Mike Williams. Cadillac Williams is coming off his first healthy season in forever, and he’ll be able to keep defenses honest.

And the offensive line can’t possibly be as bad as it was last season.

The Bucs gave up 400 points last season, partly because of a poor pass rush. First-round draft choice Gerald McCoy should help stop that gusher, but the Bucs feel they got another good one in DT Brian Price, who had 24 tackles and 8 sacks for UCLA last season.

Hopefully Price and McCoy can pair in the D-line for the next 5-6 years, and in the short term they can make life easier for a back 7 led by linebacker Brian Ruud, who is perhaps the best athlete on the team.

In the end, though, the Bucs will progress as much as Freeman does. He had some decent games, but also a few clunkers – including a 5-interception nightmare at Carolina.

THE WAY IT LOOKS NOW – Rebuilding sucks any time, but it’s tougher in the NFL when the combination of losing on the scoreboard and getting the snot kicked out of you takes both a physical and emotional toll.

But it appears second-year coach Raheem Morris has the guys pulling in one direction, and with a few breaks they could move past Carolina in the NFC South pecking order.
