With games upcoming against East Carolina, Tennessee, Houston and Tulsa, it will be a challenge for Memphis to make it to their third straight bowl game. Still, the program, which may be saying hello to a new coach next season, got some good news last Saturday in the process of snaring a win in the college football sportsbook.

Let’s talk about what was absolutely huge for Memphis last week in its win over UTEP. It was returning running back Curtis Steele, who had sat out two games and played sparingly in another, but broke out with 240 yards and two touchdowns against the Miners, keying a 35-20 win in the Liberty Bowl. This is important for the Tigers, because they have been searching for answers at quarterback. Will Hudgens got the start last Saturday, and completed 19 of 33 passes with three TD’s, but he has not been the overall answer, and neither has Tyler Bass or Arkelon Hall (no TD’s, 3 INT’s), who began the season as the starter.

That’s kind of a shame, because Memphis possesses a very talented receiver in Duke Calhoun, who wasn’t needed much against UTEP because of Steele’s dominance on the ground, but who had consecutive games of 174, 141 and 162 yards prior to that.

With 6’8″ Carlos Singleton creating matchup problems on the other side, Memphis has potentially a potent passing game if someone can get the ball to these guys.

Southern Miss really needs a shot in the arm from somewhere. The Eagles have lost three straight games, the last two while they were suffering from the injury bug.

Running back Damion Fletcher and wide receiver DeAndre Brown were missing against UAB, and the result was a 30-17 loss to a Blazer team that was mediocre and only got six completions out of quarterback Joe Webb.

Last week Fletcher and Brown were back but Austin Davis (18th in country in pass efficiency) was out, and his backup, Martevious Young, did not implode, but didn’t throw a touchdown pass either. Southern Miss was upset 25-23 by Louisville in that game. .

Young has some catching up to do; including last week’s start, he has thrown only 39 passes as a collegian.

There is quite a difference in the way each of these teams defends the run. Southern Miss allows less than three yards a carry, while Memphis has surrendered 4.7 yards an attempt. This is the way the Eagles have to go here, and if they can slow down Steele there is a good chance the rest of the Memphis offense will follow.

Sure, that was difficult for fundamentally-challenged UTEP last week, but not as much for this USM squad, which gets a full week of practice out of Young and returns to Hattiesburg after three straight road games.

This contest is critical to the bowl hopes of Larry Fedora’s team, and we think with better offensive weapons, even in the absence of Davis, they will respond.

We’ll look for Southern Miss to rebound against a Memphis team that scored its only Division I win last week. We’re laying it with the Eagles, the 15.5-point favorite in the BetUS NCAA college football sportsbook odds.
