Oh what a difference a month makes.

At this time four weeks ago, Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez had to defend himself and his players, after a 3-9 disaster last year that coupled with allegations of offseason NCAA violations that left his team in turmoil. Now entering conference play, all the bad is behind them, as Michigan is 3-0 and thinking that they might have what it takes to win the Big 10.

The Wolverines are led by two do-it-all freshmen at quarterback, Tate Forcier and Denard Robinson. Forcier has been getting more playing time, and has yet to disappoint, as on the young season, he has thrown for five touchdowns and rushed for another. His 310 yards of total offense was the difference in Michigan’s biggest win of the year, a 38-34 upset over then No. 18 ranked Notre Dame.

Robinson, also a true freshman, is more inclined to make plays with his feet. The speedy quarterback from Florida has yet to pass for a touchdown, but has already rushed for three. This weekend, the two fabulous freshmen will go against an undefeated, and virtually untested Indiana Hoosiers squad.

Indiana is 3-0 on the season, but of every team in the Big 10, we may know the least about them. After opening with a too close for comfort win over Eastern Kentucky, they’ve won their last two games, the first as a one point underdog against Western Michigan, the second as a three point underdog at Akron. This weekend will be their biggest test however, as they head to the Big House with the experts expecting them to lose by close to three touchdowns.

The Hoosiers are led by a more traditional quarterback in Ben Chappell, who early in the season has been the game-manager that they’ve needed him to be. The junior has completed close to 70 percent of his passes, and thrown three touchdowns in the Hoosiers three victories.

Defensively, Indiana has been excellent against the run, as they’ve given up just 76 yards per game. This will be a key in trying to stop Michigan’s phenomenal running attack. On the year, the Wolverines are ranked third in the country, averaging close to 270 yards rushing per game.

Speaking of Michigan, they just need to keep doing what they’ve been doing, mainly just continuing to move the chains offensively. Both Forcier and Robinson are dual threats at quarterback, and they are helped on the ground by two superb backs: Carlos Brown (averaging 8.8 yards per carry) and Brandon Minor who’s been limited by injuries this season, but is expected to play Saturday.

No one has been able to slow down Michigan offensively so far this season, and I can’t see it changing this weekend. Indiana is an improved team, but playing Eastern Kentucky, Western Michigan and Akron is hardly the warm-up that they’ll need for a trip to Michigan.

This will be Michigan’s fourth straight home game to open the season, before heading on the road the next two weeks in make or break games at Michigan State and Iowa. But in this one, the home fans will not leave disappointed.
