Both Colorado State and UNLV are searching for their second wins of the season. They’ll meet up Saturday, when the Rams host the game as 3.5-point favorites.

Colorado State (1-5, 3-3 ATS) gets some sweet relief after facing TCU and Air Force over the past two weeks. The Rams lost both games by a total of 76-27, and they better home they come through with a win against UNLV—they visit No. 11 Utah next weekend. Unfortunately, ever time Colorado State plus a leak, another seems to pop up.

Despite averaging just 56 rushing yards per game this season, Colorado State exploded against Air Force last weekend, cranking out 285 yards on the ground. It’s even more impressive considering starting running back Raymond Carter missed the game with a knee injury. That explosion was tempered by an awful showing by Pete Thomas; the quarterback passed for a measly 136 yards.

There’s at least hope the running game can keep churning, as Leonard Mason shined in Carter’s absence (22 carries, 139 yards, one touchdown).

The defense, meanwhile, had a nightmarish effort against Air Force. The Falcons run on everyone, so allowing 248 yards on the ground isn’t surprising or even disappointment. What’s especially troublesome is the beleaguered secondary, which allowed a whopping 185 yards and three touchdowns on just six completions. Those kinds of breakdowns are absolutely killer for a weaker team like Colorado State.

UNLV (1-5, 3-3 ATS) is also coming off back-to-back blowout losses, including last week’s 49-10 collapse at West Virginia. The score could have been much worse; the Mountaineers needed just nine offensive plays to build a 21-0 lead, after which the starters started coming out.

Part of the problem is suspensions and injuries; the Rebels were shorthanded against West Virginia and forced to dress 15 freshmen, including five true freshmen who started. Running back Tim Cornett was the best of the bunch. He carried 10 times for 56 yards while catching three passes for 18 yards and a touchdown. Fellow freshman Tani Maka started at linebacker and led the team with four tackles.

The Rebels are simply overwhelmed now. They’re playing too many youngsters, and they were crushed by West Virginia’s running game. Mason should find success for the second week in a row and lead Colorado State to a win and cover.
