The offense is expected to carry No. 20 Utah, but the “D” looked excellent in last week’s 27-24 overtime win over Pittsburgh (Utah wound up with a push on the three-point spread). The Utes held Pitt to just 266 yards on the night and looked sharp against both run and pass. The Panthers managed only 2.3 yards per carrying while failing to surpass 200 yards in the air. Utah also picked off a pass, recovered a fumble and notched two sacks. The biggest play of the night was the interception; freshman safety Brian Blechen made the pick on the first play of overtime, setting up Utah’s game-winning field goal.

Utah’s offense wasn’t as dominant as college football betting fans might have expected. Jordan Wynn had a solid day at quarterback, going 21/36 for 283 yards and three touchdowns, though he also tossed an interception. The rushing attack produced 122 yards on 27 carries and should be a bigger focus this week, especially with Wynn’s status in doubt. The quarterback has an injured thumb and may be replaced by Terrance Cain. Regardless of who is under center, the Utes have to do a better job protecting the football—they had three turnovers against Pitt.

UNLV was whipped 41-21 by Wisconsin, though the Rebels did manage to cover the 21-point spread. The defense was absolutely shoved around up front, as evidenced by 281 yards and four touchdowns on the ground—through the first three quarters. If there’s a silver lining, it’s the improved play of the secondary, a notable weak spot for UNLV over the past few seasons. Will Chandler looked especially impressive, returning a pick 19 yards for a score and recovering a fumble for another 82 yards.

On the other side of the ball, the Rebels need a quarterback to step up. Omar Clayton and Mike Clausen both saw action against Wisconsin and both are expected to split time again this week. Neither made any tremendous mistakes against the Badgers, but they didn’t make any big time plays, either. A little more help from the rushing attack would make their lives earlier—UNLV ran for 112 in Week 1—though it’s hard to stick to the run when you’re trailing by a large margin.

UNLV is obviously hoping to take advantage of the injury to Wynn, but the drop off from him to Cain isn’t that drastic—Cain, after all, went 7-1 as a starter in 2009. UNLV simply doesn’t have the bodies to handle Utah’s front on either side of the ball. It should be particularly noticeable when the Utes have the football; they’re going to follow Wisconsin’s recipe for success and pound the rock down UNLV’s throat. Quite simply, Utah is on another level, especially at home.
