The Bruins will bring its wounded passing attack, one of the worst in college football, while the Sun Devils, bring its over penalized bruisers to this PAC-10 showdown. Both teams have coaches who are on the hot seat and come into this week’s game desperately seeking a win to keep any glimmer of a bowl bid alive.

UCLA’s problems have stemmed from its quarter back issues from virtually opening day. First team starter Kevin Prince began the season as planned but seemed to struggle as he tried to grasp Rick Neuheisel’s new Pistol offense. And just when it looked like he might be working out the kinks, he was lost for the season with a knee injury.  Backup Richard Brehaut, who has not been the epitome of the perfect stand in, suffered a concussion last week against Washington.  He is expected to start against Arizona State, but that doesn’t give the Bruins much of an advantage, as he is a streaky passer who hasn’t impressed thus far.

The Bruins main offensive strength has been its rushing attack led by running backs Jon Franklin and Derrick Coleman.  Both have developed well in the Pistol, and are lethal to the opposition’s defense when the O-line creates open lanes.  As good as that gets, it has become the Bruins Achilles as teams that can stop the run, can in effect shut down the UCLA offense as illustrated in several of their games this season. If Brehaut struggles, the Bruins are in trouble.

UCLA’s defense is much better than its offense, but its inexperience has shown itself in several outings this season including a 60-point giveaway against No. 1 Oregon. But what team hasn’t surrendered a boatload of points to the Eugene Machine?

The Bruins are starting three true freshmen, including two on the line, and that’s bound to cause a breakdown especially versus teams that can move the ball on the ground. The lack of offense has put a lot of pressure on the defense to keep them in games and has come up big on some occasions, but has also faded as well, probably due to its extended playing time. The pass rush is a bright spot, so ASU QB Steven Threet better come prepared.

Threet, has had a decent year after transferring from Michigan, and has thrown for 18 touchdowns this season and leads the Sun Devil offense.  He has had some big moments this season, but has also shown streakiness and his 16 interceptions proves it.  ASU doesn’t have much of a running game although they possess two of the better backs in the PAC 10 in Cameron Marshall and Deatre Lewis.  The offense is inconsistent, but does have its moments. If Threet can get hot early on, this game could be over by the half.

When it comes to the Devils’  defense that is where they excel. They play hard and are great at forcing turnovers.  It held Stanford to 17 points and Wisconsin to 20.  UCLA will have trouble moving the ball against them for sure.

While I like ASU to win, they probably won’t cover the spread.
