With an embarrassing loss to Oregon State in Week 9, Cal traveled to Pullman and narrowly escaped with a 20-13 victory over the lowly Washington State Cougars.

Now they must face the No. 1 Oregon Ducks, as the team searches for just its fourth conference win as they try to break from the middle of the PAC-10 while putting some distance between them and Arizona State who they pounded 50-17 just three weeks ago.

The G-Bears will no doubt want to avenge its 42-3 blowout at the hands of the Ducks last season, but will likely become just another statistic as the Eugene Machine rages on en route to a PAC-10 championship and shot at this year’s national title.

It’s been all running back Shane Vereen, as he carries Cal on his shoulders from one week to the next. The junior out of Valencia, California leads the team with 886 yards rushing and 12 TDs while also catching three TDs.

His presence will be needed even more now that starting QB Kevin Riley is out for the season with a knee injury. Back up Brock Mansion made his first career start last week, and put up just 171 yards and two interceptions.

Mansion will need to step up his game if the Bears are going to make it even remotely interesting against the Ducks. Finding WRs Marvin Jones, who leads Cal with 42 catches for 675 yards and three TDs, and Keenan Allen, who has 382 yards and a team high five TDs receiving, will be critical to a successful outing.

However, that will not be an easy task against the Ducks who have been annihilating their opponents on both sides of the ball.

Ala Stanford, the Ducks offense started out slow, but then finished off the Washington Huskies 53-16 last week. With just three games remaining to close out the regular season, the Ducks simply need to win out to clinch a berth in the national championship game. With No. 18 Arizona and cross state rival Oregon State still left on the slate, they cannot afford to slip up against Cal.

Offensively, Oregon is number one in the country with 54.7 PPG.  They are led by RB LaMichael James who has run for 1,331 yards and 17 TDs.  However, he is not alone atop the Ducks vaunted roster and gets a huge amount of support from QB Darron Thomas who has now surpassed the 2,000-yard mark in passing yards with 22 TDs.

A majority of those receptions have been hauled in by Jeff Maehl who leads the team with 52 catches for 746 yards and 10 TDs.

But it’s not just the offense that gets the job done for the Ducks. Defensively they are just as impressive allowing a meager 17.7 PPG. They have had some bumps though, surrendering over 30-points three times this season. Something that should not be taken likely as Cal has posted over 50-points in three of its wins this year.

The Bears have been very good on their home field with a perfect record of 4-0, but those wins all came against teams under .500, and have not near the amount of firepower that Oregon possesses.  The Ducks should be able to run and pass against Cal’s defense with relative ease, as they move to 10-0 and one game closer to a national championship.
