Week 11: BYU at Colorado State Preview & Pick

BYU used a bye to fine-tune its offense; the plan worked, as the Cougars exploded in last week’s win over UNLV. The Cougars still have a slim shot at a bowl game, but they’ll need to beat Colorado State this week.

Cougars at Rams

BYU (4-5, 4-5 ATS) has rebounded from a four-game losing streak, winning three of its last four games, including last week’s 55-7 demolition against UNLV. The Cougars are also 3-1 against the spread in that span.

The offense was firing on all cylinders last week thanks to a pair of standout freshmen. Jake Heaps did it through the air, completing 19 of 31 passes for 294 yards and two scores. He wasn’t intercepted or sacked. On the ground, fellow first-year player Joshua Quezada carried 13 times for 65 yards and three touchdowns, part of a 216-yard, five-touchdown rushing effort by BYU. The Cougars racked up 516 total yards on the afternoon. Brigham Young fans can breath a huge sigh of relief after the team averaged just 16 points per outing through its first eight games.

Defensively, the Cougars have been improving. Over their last three victories (throwing out a blowout against national championship-contending TCU), they’ve allowed 16 points per game—a significant improvement over the four-game losing streak, when the “D” was gouged for nearly 32 per game. The Cougars held UNLV to just 144 total yards, including just 22 on the ground. BYU has allowed 171 rush yards per game on the season.

Colorado State (3-7, 6-4 ATS) lost 24-19 at San Diego State, but it covered for the sixth time in seven games. The Rams made simply allowed too many big plays to pull out a win straight up. Aztec running back Ronnie Hillman carried 31 times for 151 yards and a touchdown, keeping the chains moving all day. The Rams did pick off a pair of passes and recover three fumbles, though, so it made its own fair share of big plays.

Inconsistency has plagued the offense. Colorado State can’t seem to get its passing attack or ground game rolling on the same day. Against San Diego State, the rushing attack was nowhere to be found (34 carries, 31 yards). That could change as Raymond Carter rounds into form. He opened the season as the starter and was rounding into form before a knee injury; last week was his first action since the injury, and he carried 11 times for 31 yards. Quarterback Pete Thomas threw for 266 yards and a score, but he also threw a pick and was sacked five times.

BYU has won six straight meetings between these teams, but Colorado State has covered the last three. This will be the closest spread in four years, as the Cougars were favored by double-digits in the last four games. The Rams are catching BYU at the wrong time; Brigham Young is showing signs of life. If the offense delivers like it did against UNVL, the Rams face another double-digit loss.
