Pac 10 Schools 2010-2011 Football Previews: UW Huskies

Coach: Steve Sarkisian
2009 Record: 5-7

Washington Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +10000

As each game passes, Huskies pivot Jake Locker is starting to look more and more like a poor man’s Tim Tebow with athletic ability and size, but with higher potential as a passer (he can whistle the ball like a young Brett Favre).

The combination is truly tantalizing; Locker’s continued improvement is a testament to second-year coach Steve Sarkisian, who developed some beauts while under Pete Carroll at USC.

If Locker can put the Huskies on his back much like Tebow would do with the Gators in the past few years, UW looks to make some marked improvement in the conference.

The 2010 Huskies are much better than their ’09 counterparts and with one of the NCAA’s best quarterbacks at the helm, there is enthusiasm in Seattle like there hasn’t been since the start of the 2000s.

Team Strengths:

We’ve talked about Locker. He’s good for 3,000 yards, at least a 20-10 ratio and 500+ yards rushing – the definition of an all-purpose threat. Running back Chris Polk had an excellent freshman year in 2009, cracking 1,100 yards. Expect Polk to help balance the offense nicely.

All the important receivers from last season also return, notably freakish junior TE Kavario Middleton.

On defense, Washington loses its sackmaster Daniel Te’o-Nesheim, but outstanding Will ’backer Mason Foster should lead a capable unit. Also, expect the secondary to take a major leap forward.

Team Weaknesses:

Two new starters at the defensive end position will hurt the pressure from the front four. It’s always tough to replace a double-digit sack man like Te’o-Nesheim. If Locker or Polk go down with injuries, the offense could spin its wheels because the depth isn’t ideal.

Their road travel schedule worries me. The Huskies have to play 5 conference road games this year, and I’m not sure they have the confidence, skill or manpower to pull off big wins in these games.

There is a lot of pressure on them in Seattle and to most the season will be ONLY be successful if the team reaches a bowl game.

2010-2011 Washington Football Prediction: 7-6

One can’t forget that Sarkisian squeezed 5-7 out of this team last year, which doesn’t sound impressive until one remembers the Huskies were winless in 2008.

It was quite an achievement, and if Sarkisian can pull in some big-name recruits to the Pacific Northwest, the Huskies should earn more than just table scraps.

There are some tough games on the slate – UW draws non-conference opponents BYU and Nebraska – but this team is much better and the Huskies will likely make a bowl.
