Coach: Frank Beamer
2008 Record: 10-4

Although VT often folds like a cheap suit versus elite competition (5-24 record vs. Top 10 teams since head coach Frank Beamer signed on 22 seasons ago) the Hokies are routinely among the class of the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Virginia Tech Gambling Odds from Betus.com to win BCS: +1600

In 2009 Tech should stay among the ACC’s heavy hitters with its usual brand of run game and stout defense.

V-Tech won’t have to worry about scores getting out of hand with the same old high-octane athletes on the defensive side of the ball. End Jason Worilds is a nightmare for quarterbacks, linebacker Barquell Rivers will be around the field and free safety Kam Chancellor is an absolute specimen at 6”4, 230.

Offensively, Blacksburg fans must hope QB Tyrod Taylor improves his passing while continuing to show Mike Vickish tendencies (on the field, not in the kennel).

Team Strengths
Taylor is dynamic and he’ll be handing the ball off to a stable of tailbacks highlighted by soph Darren Evans. Evans took a beefy 287 totes last season and punched into the end zone 11 times.

The offensive tackles should be athletic with veteran former tight end Ed Wang and excellent second-year star Blake DeChristopher. The D can fly. As a two-time winner of the ACC’s Coach of the Year, Beamer is worth his salary.

Keith Toston and Beau Johnson represent depth at tailback in case of an injury to Hunter and Patrick Lavine, Orie Lemon and Andre Sexton comprise one of the Big 12’s best group of ’backers.

Team Weaknesses
The Hokies have seldom exhibited much of a passing game; this year shouldn’t be much different. The secondary loses great cornerback Victor “Macho” Harris and his six interceptions. There could be questions at center with the departure of Ryan Shuman.

Tech has some stout competition in the conference, but not really in the Coastal division in which they play. Games versus Alabama, Nebraska and at Georgia Tech loom as tests.

The Hokies won the ACC title last season with a less talented team, so we will see what Beamer, the fleet-footed Taylor and a ravenous defense can do in 2009.

2009 Virginia Tech Hokies Record Prediction: 10-4
