Utah State Aggies 2015 NCAA Football Gambling Odds & Predictions

2015-16 Football Previews – (MWC) – Aggies

Looking to show that their 2014 was no fluke, the Utah State Aggies will be coming out gunning for the Mountain West Conference during the 2015-16 NCAA Football Season. There were a lot of changes in the offseason for Matt Wells and company and it will be interesting to see how those changes will affect the outcomes on the football field.

After challenging Boise State for the Mountain division title, the Aggies want to prove they can take the division from the conference power Broncos.

Utah State lost Athletic Director Scott Barnes to Pitt in the offeseason. While this won’t directly affect the football program, it could have its trickle down effect depending on the incoming AD’s philosophies.

The team also secured a 22-year naming rights deal with Maverik that would not only bring about upgrades to the stadium, but will generate an extra $6.3 million in revenue.

Let’s break down the team’s strengths and weaknesses in 2015.

Team Strengths

This season, the Aggies are returning an astounding 15 starters. Linebacker Kyler Fackrel might be the biggest name on that list. On a team that thrives on defense to keep them in games with high powered offenses, Fackrel has proven to be not only a performer on defense for the Aggies, but also a clear cut leader.

Also coming back is QB Chuckie Keeton. Coming off back to back knee injuries the last 2 seasons, Keeton is seemingly healthy and ready to make a big splash in his last year of eligibility. Before going down in 2013 and 2014, Keeton was putting up impressive numbers. If he stays healthy this season, the Aggies will be one of the most well-rounded teams not only in the Mountain West, but among ALL mid-major schools.

Another boost for the team is the return of Kevin Clune, who took a 1 year hiatus in Hawaii. The ex-linebackers coach is back in the saddle at USU, but this time as defensive coordinator. His aggressive-style defense could give the Aggies the added edge they need to win the conference.

Team Weaknesses

As you’re going to see again this season, a lot hinges on Chuckie Keeton. While he’s healthy now, one can’t help but wonder how his knees are going to hold up after two consecutive season-ending injuries to them.

Beyond Keeton, or whoever would replace him, is whether or not the signal caller will have the protection needed to do his job to the best of his ability. Last season, Utah State had to replace a lot of starters – including offensive linemen. There won’t be a single starting senior on the line this year.

Two of the starters the team DOES need to replace are its top pass rushers from last season B.J. Larson and Zach Vigil. While the rest of the defense is mostly intact, the aggressive style of Clune’s defensive playcalling hinges on a serious pass rush.

2015-16 Utah State Aggies Prediction: 10-2

This is a bold prediction. Not only do the Aggies have to face the likes of Boise State and San Diego State, but they also have BYU on the schedule as well as Pac-12 schools Washington and Utah. While the task seems daunting, Utah State is more than ready to try out the next level of competition – and thrive.

Boise State should be worried this season.
