The Cardinal defeated the Bruins twice in a span of less than seven days to capture the Pac-12 title in 2012, but it’s the Bruins that are higher in the ranking for this go around, and the Cardinal enter reeling after their offense failed them in an upset loss to Utah.

Stanford will look to bounce back from that loss and avoid consecutive losses for the first time in 12 years, and they’ll do so at Stanford Stadium, where they’ve won 12 in a row.

The Bruins cracked the top 10 in the AP poll this week for the first time since 2005. That came after a decisive 37-10 win over Pac-12 rival California. Quarterback Brett Hundley threw for a career-high 410 yards against the Golden Bears, completing 31 of 41 passes.

His success came at a cost as the team rushed for just 78 yards in the game. That had a lot to do with the absence of running back Jordon James, who hurt his ankle the week before against Utah. The Bruins rank fifth in the nation with 547.0 yards per game, and they rank seventh in the nation with 45.8 points per game.

The UCLA defense allowed California quarterback Jared Goff to throw for 215 yards a week after he threw for a school-record 504 yards. Nine penalties were assessed against the Bruins, who lead the FBS in penalties for the second consecutive season.

The Stanford offense really let the team down against Utah, and now ranks 11th in total offense in the Pac-12. The team rushed for a season-low 143 yards in the game. Quarterback Kevin Hogan couldn’t bail the team out. After leading a drive down to the Utah six yard line, Hogan failed to connect on either of his final two passes of the game, and Stanford turned the ball over on downs, falling by a score of 27-21. With the loss, Hogan fell to 10-1 as a starter.

The Stanford defense had a ton of trouble stopping Utah quarterback Travis Wilson, who completed 23 of 34 passes for 234 yards and a pair of scores. Running back Bubba Poole also gave the Cardinal defense fits, rushing for 111 yards and adding 75 additional yards on seven receptions.

Stanford beat UCLA twice in six days last season, but those games feel like an awful long time ago given the current form of each side. The Bruins will surely have revenge on their mind, and with their offense playing at such a high level, they may get the victory they desire.

The Bruins are 5-0 ATS this season.
