Conference USA Football Previews: Tulane

Head Coach: Bob Toledo
2009 Record: 3-9

Tulane Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +900000

Bob Toledo was brought in to try to revive the Tulane program that has been scuffling for quite some time, and to this point it has not worked at all.

The Green Wave are 9-27 in Toledo’s three years as a coach and the few loyal fans they do have are starting to get frustrated at the lack of progress being made.

Tulane seems to be getting a little more team speed in the past year or so, but they continue to have issues with depth and production from most of their units.

They may be a little more talented than in past years, but the 2010 schedule for Tulane is definitely tougher than they are accustomed to.

Team Strengths:

Shakiel Smith is an extremely talented sophomore that will be in the middle of a whole lot of plays for the Green Wave this season. Expect Smith to be breaking up passes and making impressive tackles at his free safety position.

The rest of the secondary is also solid, and it should be their strength on defense in 2010. Sports Betting at Sportsbook.com

The offensive line should be the best Tulane has had in quite some time as four of their five starters return. The experience here should allow them to give their quarterback plenty of time to throw the football.

Team Weaknesses:

The Green Wave don’t return a single runner who had more than 100 yards rushing a year ago. Tulane wants to have a balanced offense, but there are tons of questions about who will get the running game going in 2010.

The defensive line will be a major weakness this year. They return only one starter from their front seven on the defensive side of the football, and that group allowed a stunning 205 yards per game on the ground. Expect Tulane’s opponents to have a field day running the football once again this year.

The Green Wave lack the talent to be among the best teams in the conference, but their lack of discipline is troubling. Last year, they ranked 119th in the nation in turnover margin. If that doesn’t improve in 2010, they’ll have a very long year.

2010-2011 Tulane Green Wave Football Predictions: 2-10

The Green Wave were able to get to three wins last year because they had an easy schedule, but that isn’t the case this season. They should win their season opener, and then after that they may not be favored in a game the rest of the season. I think they’ll win one more at home inside Conference USA, but this team is going to be very bad once again.

The defense will be among the worst in football and the offense won’t be balanced enough to consistently move the football.
