Longhorns vs Sooners NCAA Football Spread/Handicapping

After sneaking a victory on the road at Oklahoma State the Texas Longhorns stumbled last Saturday, running into the buzzsaw that is West Virginia and QB Geno Smith.

Texas

The thinking in making them a favourite last week was that WVU wouldn’t be able to continue their pinball attack against a quality D.

48 points later we are left to wonder whether that Longhorns D is for real – they gave up 31 points to Ole Miss earlier this year.

Against WVU, Texas was able to put up fairly impressive offensive numbers.  QB David Ashe barely missed and running back Joe Bergeron may not have put up a lot of yards but got 4 big touchdowns.

Texas wouldn’t give up and I think that speaks as loud as a win might have that they are getting back to being Texas.

To confirm that they need to put up another big game against their biggest rival.

I wonder where this one might have landed if Texas has won last week because a pick’em in this rivalry might have broken Vegas – and yes I still call it the Red River Shootout.

I feel like both teams could win but only one – Oklahoma – could potentially blow the other out.

Love the fact they always play this one at noon to get the weekend started.

Oklahoma

The Sooners bounced back last week to beat a Texas Tech squad that was undefeated prior to albeit not really tested. In winning last week Oklahoma also exorcised some demons as they hadn’t won in Lubbock since Adrian Peterson left campus. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

The relatively easy nature of the win means that they should have plenty in the tank to attack Texas.

Last year OU spanked the Longhorns 55-17 as 11 point favourites.  This year should be much more competitive.

The game against Texas Tech was not the dominating affair the final score might have led you to believe though.

QB Landry Jones was solid but it was the errors from Red Raiders QB Seth Doege that really sealed the fate of Tech.

Jones and the offense are going to have to be better against Texas to achieve the same result.  Something has been off with these guys all season long but the potential is still there.

Odds are this game will be decided by more than a FG – only once in the last 10 years has the winner not won by more than 3.

Acknowledging that, I like the Sooners chances to win and cover.

There was a reason they were the higher ranked team in the preseason and the favourite now.  I also still don’t trust the Texas QB situation even though David Ashe has gotten more comfortable.

Spread Pick:  Oklahoma -3
O/U Pick:  Under
