MAC Conference Football Previews: Temple

Temple Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: (Field To Win Odds) 25/1

Temple wasn’t absolutely perfect top to bottom last year but it did enough things right to field a competitive team and reach a bowl for the first time since 1990 last year.

Most of its key contributors are back – but will a quarterbacking change be the Owls’ undoing?

Team Strengths:

Everything to do with running the ball – doing it and stopping it – is a plus for Temple. The Owls have one of the country’s most dynamic young backs in Bernard Pierce.

He was overshadowed by Pittsburgh’s Dion Lewis last year but was a fantastic freshman for Temple, running for 1,361 yards, scoring 16 times and topping 185 yards in four different games. The offense will revolve around him. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Temple had the MAC’s top run defense last year and could again in 2010 with Elijah Joseph and Tahir Whitehead manning the linebacker corps.

The D-line can pressure the quarterback; defensive end Adrian Robinson tallied 13 sacks last season en route to winning MAC Defensive Player of the Year.

Team Weaknesses:

Quarterback is a question mark. Last year’s starting pivot, Vaughn Charlton, has converted himself to a tight end. That means Chester Stewart should be the man taking snaps now. He wasn’t good in his limited opportunities last year, completing just 26 of 65 passes, but he can make plays with his feet.

If Stewart doesn’t at least play well enough to make teams respect the Owls’ passing game, opposing defenses will key on Pierce and really limit Temple’s scoring potential.

Temple 2010-2011 Football Predictions: 9-5

Stewart could threaten to bring Temple down but it’s not like Charlton set the world on fire last year either. The Owls can ride their running game and very solid defense to another good season in the MAC.

They’ll face plenty of rebuilding offenses and new quarterbacks, meaning they should win more by keeping opponents’ off the board than by scoring themselves.
