2015-16 Football Previews – (SEC) – Gamecocks

It’s time for the 2015 South Carolina Gamecocks season to open in less than a week. Steve Spurrier will have his work cut out for him as he tries to get over the loss of many key players and keep his Gamecocks relevant in a tough SEC conference.

SEC 2015-2016 College Football Preview – Gamecocks

Head Coach: Steve Spurrier
2014 Record: 7-6
South Carolina Odds to SEC: 30/1

A disappointing 2014 campaign was capped off with a 24-21 win over Miami to keep the Gamecocks over .500.

However, the Gamecocks had aspirations of doing major damage in the SEC East. Those didn’t start off according to plan as they were upset in a trouncing by the Aggies.

The major downfall came from the defensive breakdown. The Gamecocks allowed 30.4 points a game which ranked 91st overall in the nation. Their biggest disappointments in terms of defensive breakdowns came against the Aggies (52 points) and against a weak Kentucky team, that dropped a 45 spot on them.

Still, even with all the losses on both sides of the ball this past offseason, if anybody can keep the stability of the program, it’s the ole ball coach. Spurrier has proven himself as one of the best coaches in the country.

He has a national title (with Florida) and reached 9 bowl games in 10 season.

Team Strengths

RB Depth: One of the main losses this past season was RB Mike Davis who nearly rushed for 1000 years in 2014. However, the Gamecocks have plenty of depth to work with heading into this season.

The front runner at the RB position will be Brandon Wilds. The now Senior ran for 570 yards in 2014 with 4 touchdowns.

South Carolina will also have Sophomore David Williams and Junior Pharoh Cooper. Both RBs rushed for over 200 yards in 2014 and had a couple touchdowns to their name each.

To protect any injuries or struggles in their top tier, South Carolina also has Senior Shon Carson.

The depth is there for the Gamecocks to offer a variety of different running packages. With Spurrier, you never know which RB will be in on certain downs. The man always has various tricks up his sleeve.

Team Weaknesses

Quarterback: Dylan Thompson was the backbone to the Gamecocks’ offense in 2014. Thompson threw for 3574 yards and 26 touchdowns to only 11 interceptions.

The problem with that, is he was the main component and it gave nobody in behind him in the depth chart a chance to get some playing time.

The Gamecocks come into the 2015 season with a Sophomore, Junior, and 2 Freshmen on their depth chart. Sophomore Conor Mitch is expected to be the so called number 1 heading into the season opener.

However, Mitch had just 6 passing attempts in 2014. As for the other 3, they saw no playing time in 2014. It will take time to develop an offensive scheme to get these guys settled in.

2015 South Carolina Prediction: 6-6

The Gamecocks are going to struggle in 2015, especially early. They’re going to need to first find a QB to be the true #1 and show the ability to throw down field.

These guys have no experience, which means Spurrier will rely heavily on the rushing attack.

With a thin defense and an even worse offense, the Gamecocks will need to control a lot of the clock and hope Wilds can get himself into a rhythm to take some pressure off.

With Spurrier though, he’s the man that can find an answer to every problem. Expect some early growing pains, but South Carolina will flirt with the .500 mark in 2015.

A Bowl appearance this season would be a giant success for the Gamecocks.
