Pinstripe Bowl Preview

Rutgers committed 6 turnovers in their last game of the season losing that game, which cost them a shot at a BCS bowl game. Rutgers only faced one ranked team all season and they lost that game. NCAAF lines have Rutgers as a slight 1.5-point favorite in this game with a total of 44.5.

In their last games of the season Rutgers lost to UCONN 40-22 and Iowa State lost to Kansas State 30-23.

On the season Rutgers was 8-4 ATS with an O/U record of 3-9 and Iowa State was 7-5 ATS with an O/U record of 5-7.

Rutgers has a solid passing offense and they may need to rely on that and their defense to win the Pinstripe Bowl since their rushing offense only ranks 115th in the nation. QB Gary Nova leads the Scarlet Knights and his top targets are WR Mohamed Sanu (109 rec 1,144 yards 7 TD) and Brandon Coleman (16 rec 466 yards 5 TD). Even though Coleman only had 16 receptions this season he averaged nearly 30 yards per catch and the Iowa State pass defense, which ranks 73rd in the nation, cannot allow him to make the big play down the field.

Iowa State’s pass defense does not have a high ranking, but they faced the great passing offenses in the Big 12 facing such teams as Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Baylor, and Texas A&M.

The Rutgers’ rushing offense had negative rushing yards in the loss to UCONN, but that may not happen in this game facing a ISU run defense that only ranks 110th in the nation. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

ISU QB Jared Barnett played great in the won over Oklahoma State, but in the last 2 games of the season he failed to pass for over 160 yards. He has a decent WR corps, but will be going up against the strength of the Rutgers’ D, which is their pass defense that ranks 11th in the nation.

The Rutgers run defense ranks 57th in the nation and they gave up nearly 180 rushing yards in the loss to UCONN. ISU RB James White and QB Barnett have combined to rush for 1,136 yards this season and they will look to establish the run early and if they can move the chains on the ground they have a great chance to win.

Betting Trends

Rutgers is 4-1-1 ATS in their last 6 neutral site games as a favorite and in their last 9 game the posted total has gone Under 7 times.

Iowa State has covered the spread in their last 5 games facing a team with a winning record, have covered the spread in 5 of their last 6 games overall, and in their last 6 games the total has gone Under 5 times.

Jason’s Pick: Rutgers will have the home field advantage in this game since it is being held in the Big Apple and they are from New Jersey. However, while ISU had their issues on D this season they did come up with 24 turnovers, they played a much tougher schedule, and I think they are a better team. Take Iowa State to win and cover and take the Over as well, as each team will score a few TD’s.
