San Jose State Spartans 2015 NCAA Football Gambling Odds & Picks

2015-2016 Football Previews (MWC) – Spartans

The San Jose State Spartans are hoping to take a decent leap in the right direction in head coach Ron Caragher’s third season at the helm. The team contains a solid amount of young talent, but the question is whether or not the coaching staff can get the most out of the youth, turning potential into production at this point in the process.

Head Coach: Ron Caragher
2014 Record: 3-9
Season Win Total (from 5Dimes): 4

Unfortunately for Caragher, if the team can’t turn potential into potential, maximizing the youth on the roster, it could mean the hot seat gets even hotter.

This team has more questions than answers, and unfortunately for the man running the sidelines, his future with the program is one of those that is murky entering the 2015 NCAA Football Season.

Team Strengths

If you look at the raw numbers, you’ll see that the Spartans gave up 29.4 points per contest last season. That number was only good enough for 85th in the nation, but it doesn’t show the one spot where this group was actually solid on that side of the ball.

In 2014, San Jose State led the nation in pass defense. It was also third in the Mountain West in tota yards allowed.

Specifically, linebacker and secondary should be an area of strength in 2015. Christian Tiago has returned, and Hawaii transfer Jared Leaf will see the field after sitting last season. As for the secondary, this group of youngsters is led by sophomore Maurice McKnight.

Team Weaknesses

As good as the pass defense was last season, the run defense simply couldn’t hang. The team gave up 239 yards per game on the ground, and was just 123rd in the nation in terms of tackles for a loss.

Things could get even rougher in 2015 with the losses on the defensive line that this team will have to endure.

Then again, shaking up the rotation in that area can’t lead to much worse production — and it could even get a bit better with fresh blood on the line ready to prove it can be better than 2014.

Offensively, this team has a huge question mark behind center. Last season, Blake Jurich won the starting gig in the fall, but ultimately lost it to Joe Gray. To make matters even worse, Gray lost the job to Mitch Ravizza, who then gave it back to Gray before the year came to a close.

If nothing else, the Spartans must hope to find some sort of consistency behind center in 2015. A mid-season chance may be necessary at some point, but figuring out the rotation as early as possible should help.

San Jose State 2015-2016 Prediction: 4-8

The 2015-16 season has a chance to be a transitionary period for the Spartans. That doesn’t sound like a good thing on the surface, but in reality, this team needs to make a change, and this could be the start of an improved program.

San Jose State’s recruiting class will slowly begin to see the field throughout the year. But while the newcomers begin to earn playing time, the uncertainties at quarterback (and on the lines as well), will hold this team back from reaching its true potential.

Consider a difficult schedule as well, and making a bowl game looks as if its a pipe dream — or at best, a serious accomplishment should it come to fruition.
