Coach: Greg Schiano
2008 Record: 8-5

Coach Schiano has turned this program around quite thoroughly. Before 2005, the last bowl game Rutgers had played in was 1978, the “Garden State Bowl.”

I could not make that up if I tried. In ’09 the Knights will likely improve upon 2008’s record and enjoy a very weak schedule. With the addition of highly touted 6”5, 225 lb golden-boy style pivot Tom Savage, Schiano has proven that Rutgers is no longer a laughable destination for top players. Rutgers must replace all-time leading passer Mike Teel.

Senior Domenic Natale will try to fill that void but will have some young receivers to throw to; dynamic duo Kenny Britt and Tiquan Underwood are gone. The good news is little Tim Brown is lightning-quick and the offensive line will be phenomenal.

Defensively, experience and talent at key spots should keep Rutgers in every Big East game.

Team Strengths
Defensive end is shored up with George Johnson and Alex Silvestro as well as linebacker, with Michigan transfer Marcus Witherspoon supplementing already-sick Ryan D’Imperio and Manny Abreu.

Left tackle Anthony Davis and right guard Art Forst are indeed twin towers of power.

Team Weaknesses
Simply, Natale is not Teel. Running back Kordell Young isn’t making anyone forget about now Baltimore Ravens-standout Ray Rice. At safety, Zaire Kitchen is a fresh face, but anyone with the first name ‘Zaire’ has to be at least a little badass, right?

The defensive tackles are also a smidge undersized.

The Scarlet Knights get Pitt and West Virginia at home, and other than those two tests the schedule looks highly manageable. While Rutgers is green at best and modest at worst in some positions, the offensive line is the best in the conference, the defense is very stout and Savage is waiting in the wings to take the reins from Natale.

Schiano and Rutgers could be playing football in January.

2009 Rutgers Scarlet Knights Record Prediction: 10-3
