Right now one hiccup at West Virginia is the difference between them and first place but since the Mountaineers are not really in the race that shouldn’t hurt them too badly.

Speaking of not in the race that is where the Iowa State Cyclones are right now.

They have yet to win a conference game this year and have only one win on the year in total making going bowling nearly impossible at this point.

Oklahoma State

The Cowboys are probably still smarting from that loss to Iowa State a couple of years ago that probably kept them out of the BCS Championship game. The same spoils are not on the line in this one but it is still important that the Cowboys win and live up to a preseason promise of a conference title.

That team was an offensive juggernaut while this team is merely very good, lacking the running threat to go with a souped up passing game. QB J.W. Walsh has run away with the starting job at QB this fall, literally, as he is leading the team in rushing, though probably not by design. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

The Cowboys have become a much better defensive team it seems as they are giving up less than 20ppg and not being forced to rely on turnovers as much as they have in the past.

Those things tend to even out over time so this approach is a good one.

Iowa State

Iowa State is a very bad defensive football team but lets not judge them too harshly against the other teams in the league because they haven’t all faced Baylor yet. Last week the Bears hung 71 on Iowa State in a game that was 64–0 at one point.

Oklahoma State is not as explosive as Baylor but they could get a boost if the Cyclones are still hanging their heads.

As bad as that defensive performance was it might be more concerning that they failed to move the ball against Baylor. The Bears have gotten better on defense this year but they still give up more than 300 yards per game. They held Iowa State to only 174. You want to say it was an aberration but it is getting harder and harder to make excuses for the Cyclones.

They usually surprise once a year but this year the surprise might be if they can stay out of the basement of the B12.
