VT has won 7 of 9 but 4 of the last 5 have been decided by a touchdown or less and it is a fantastic chess match between Paul Johnson’s run oriented attack and the experience of Frank Beamer and his defensive coordinator Bud Foster as they try and stop it.

More than most the Hokies have been able to figure out how to slow down an attack that just plows through so many others, even in the ACC.

Virginia Tech

It was easy to forget about the Hokies this year. Last year was a down year for the program and they started the season by getting pounded by Alabama. Since then they have collected three victories but barely beating C-USA squads Like East Carolina and Marshall doesn’t exactly push you to the top of the rankings.

This week conference play starts and they will definitely be a factor in the ACC. Maybe not in terms of battling for the Championship themselves but this team can beat anyone on their schedule and could upset someone else’s party any weekend.

The season may only be a quarter of the way through but senior QB Logan Thomas has been even worse than last year’s disappointment.

He has thrown 6 interceptions already and isn’t even completing 50% of his passes. He has to be the man on Thursday for them to have any chance of beating this familiar foe. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

The offense has to give the defense a chance to catch their breath every once in awhile.

Georgia Tech

Georgia Tech has a chance to wrap up the Coastal Division early as they play their top challengers three weeks in a row (this is number 2). They had a nice comeback against North Carolina last week but this week they welcome the Hokies, who have given them fits for years.

Last week against the Tar Heels they had their usual success on the ground but you could argue it was their defense that won the game as they shutout UNC in the second half.

North Carolina is probably a better offensive team than VT but not as stingy as the Hokies on D so this will be another challenging but winnable game.

The buzz around Georgia Tech is building and deservedly so. The running game is there and this year it looks like they may have the defense and quarterback play to compete at a higher level. Just hope they aren’t looking ahead to Miami.
