They were off last week but better be ready for N.C. State which has made a habit out of beating highly ranked conference teams, they are just usually named Florida State.

The Wolfpack were also off last week, probably catching their breath after eeking out a win against FCS Richmond. Its Thursday night so the whole football world will be watching and it should be fun. These two combined for 110 points last season in a Clemson home victory.

Clemson

For Clemson the biggest challenge is going to be managing expectations until they square off with Florida State in exactly a month. The win against Georgia was impressive but they were a little sluggish early before beating South Carolina State by 39 (an ATS loss) in week 2. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Last year these two teams played a wild one as the Tigers put up 62 points. In that game QB Tajh Boyd accounted for 8 TDs (5 passing and 3 running) throwing for more than 400 yards while also rushing for better than 100 yard in one of the most prolific performances ever. The Tigers can afford a little rust in this one as long as it isn’t from Boyd.

WR Sammie Watkins was the top dog at receiver that day last year so he should be excited about the facing the Wolfpack. Defensively they gave up 48 points but that was against an NFL calibre QB for N.C. State. That is unlikely to happen again given the Wolfpack could only score 23 points against Richmond.

N.C. State

Not much is expected from N.C. State this season. They are decidedly below FSU and Clemson in terms of talent but could easily wind up being the third best team in their division and thus finish with a solid record and a bowl appearance.

There was some encouragement after the opener when they beat Louisiana Tech rather easily but struggling against FCS Richmond has people concerned. New coach Dave Doeren is trying to keep the team balanced and so far they have been effective running and passing the football. That bodes well because they will definitely want to run the ball to try and slow things down a little bit against Clemson but they also will likely have to get their passing game going to play catchup.

Their new QB, transfer Pete Thomas, is a bug guy with a big arm. They are going to need him to stand tall to have any chance of upsetting the Tigers.
