The Commodores enter Saturday’s road game with 14 straight division losses, but catch a break taking on the Gamecocks who are rebounding off a tough loss last week to rival Georgia in Athens.
Vanderbilt senior wideout Jordan Matthews leads the SEC with 16 catches and 289 yards and needs just three touchdowns to break a school record for career receiving touchdowns.

He will be tested in this matchup along with quarterback Austyn Carta-Samuels who has completed 60.3 percent of his passes with three touchdowns and two interceptions.

South Carolina will try to shut Samuels down by sending in junior defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, who recorded a school-record 13 sacks last year.

Meanwhile, South Carolina knows it has little room for error going forward after last week’s loss and will look for quarterback Connor Shaw to elevate his game.

Shaw has played well so far this season, completing 60 percent of his passes and rushing for 118 yards without turning the ball over. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

He will be assisted by RB Mike Davis and Brandon Wilds who  is averaging 4.9 yards per carry in limited action. Looking to stop them will be a Vanderbilt defense that allows 145.5 rushing yards per game and 168.5 passing yards.

Defensively, the Gamecocks will also need to tighten up their defense that allowed 41 points to Georgia.

They need better performances out of their front seven if they want to stop Vandy’s triple-threat running attack of Jerron Seymour, Brian Kimrow and Wesley Tate.

The Gamecocks are riding a 12-game home win streak, the third longest in school history and third longest active streak in the country while posting an 8-2 record against the spread in their last 10 home games. The team is also 7-3 against the spread following a loss and 9-1 against the spread in their last 10 games following a loss.

The Commodores on the other hand, are 4-0 against the spread in their last four road games, 6-2 against the spread in their last eight games, and 6-0 against the spread following a win. Vandy is 3-1-1 against the spread in their last five games at South Carolina.

Matt’s Prediction

This is a huge game for Vandy and their second SEC game this season.

In the meantime, South Carolina has bounced back before and I look for them to be focused again this week.
