Denard Robinson, Michigan

“Shoelace” has only had arguably the most all-around explosive season in Michigan history to this point. Through five weeks, he has been lethal through the air or on the ground, not unlike Texas’s Vince Young from five seasons ago. Robinson has thrown for over 1,000 yards – at a remarkable 70% clip – with seven TDs to one interception.

In addition to this clinic of efficiency, he’s chipped in 905 rushing yards and an eye-popping eight majors. It’s only Week 6! If the Wolverines’ sophomore pivot keeps up even close to this pace, he should be the consensus Heisman winner this season. To Michigan fans, the name Tate Forcier (last year’s heralded freshman QB) is but a distant memory.

Kellen Moore, Boise State

The Smurf Turf Southpaw (did I just make up that nickname?) is showing everyone how to pass effectively in 2010. The undersized junior leads his offense with a wizard’s command, tossing for 1,069 yards at a 66% completion rate and an 11-1 ratio. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

What Moore doesn’t bring to the table compared to Robinson is the threat to scramble. Regardless, humble Boise has been a giant slayer for several seasons now, the last couple under Moore; it’s high-time the Broncos get the credit they deserve, even in college football’s individual awards.

LaMichael JamesOregon

If you could bottle lightning, you’d be looking at it with the Ducks’ sophomore. James has rushed for 712 yards and seven TDs through five games and is ripping big gainers off at a silly eight yards per rush.

Oregon’s offense has been video game-esque to this point, but James might have to work yet more inconceivable magic to leapfrog Robinson and Moore. At least you can say one thing for James: every time he leaves a Pac-10 secondary in the dust on the way to the promised land, special teams coaches NFL-wide start to salivate.

Terrelle Pryor, Ohio State

In support of Pryor: some years ago OSU’s Troy Smith won the Heisman, being not the best quarterback on the best team. If Pryor continues to lead an unbeaten Buckeyes squad in gutsy fashion, maybe history can repeat itself? Yet, similar candidates with better stats on Boise State and Alabama might have something to say about that.

Other Mentionables

Mark Ingram, Alabama The reigning Heisman champ is such a horse, but he’s coming off injuries and splits carries with other phenom Trent Richardson.

Andrew Luck, Stanford Luck and Arkansas’ Ryan Mallett represent the two pivots bringing the most NFL-ready skill-set to the table, but will their teams’ performances be up to snuff?
